Hospital admission and emergency care attendance risk for SARS-CoV-2 delta (B.1.617.2) compared with alpha (B.1.1.7) variants of concern: a cohort study

Katherine A. Twohig et al.

Summary: A study in England found that patients with COVID-19 infected with the delta variant were more likely to be admitted to hospital or attend emergency care compared to those infected with the alpha variant. This suggests that outbreaks of the delta variant in unvaccinated populations may pose a greater burden on healthcare services.

Loss of Smell and Taste Among Healthcare Personnel Screened for Coronavirus 2019

Russell R. Kempker et al.

Summary: Among 283 symptomatic healthcare personnel tested for SARS-CoV-2, 18% tested positive. Among the 51 positive cases, self-reported loss of smell and taste were common symptoms, with high specificity for a positive SARS-CoV-2 test.

Clinical Characteristics and Predictors of Outcomes of Hospitalized Patients With Coronavirus Disease 2019 in a Multiethnic London National Health Service Trust: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Pablo N. Perez-Guzman et al.

Summary: Ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected by COVID-19, with factors such as severe hypoxemia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, severe renal impairment, and low albumin being associated with death. Black patients have an increased odds of death compared to whites, even after adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities. Further research is needed to explore the biological drivers of differences in COVID-19 outcomes by ethnicity.

A structural equation model to examine the clinical features of mild-to-moderate COVID-19: A multicenter Italian study

Maria Rosaria Barillari et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the clinical features of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in Italian patients, investigating the prevalence of smell and taste disorders. It found a significant correlation between smell and taste disorders and general symptoms, with smell disorders potentially occurring before other symptoms and independent of nasal obstruction or rhinorrhea. Moreover, there was no significant difference in symptoms between clinically diagnosed and laboratory-confirmed patients.

Ontological modeling and analysis of experimentally or clinically verified drugs against coronavirus infection

Yingtong Liu et al.

Summary: This study identified chemical drugs and antibodies effective against human coronaviruses and enriched biological processes related to drug targets through Gene Ontology (GO) analysis. The use of Coronavirus Infectious Disease Ontology (CIDO) allowed for representation of various entities related to coronaviruses, and systematic analysis of the knowledgebase provided scientific insights. A proposed Host-coronavirus interaction (HCI) checkpoint cocktail strategy aims to interrupt key checkpoints in the dynamic HCI network for rational drug design, with support from interoperable ontologies.

Estimated transmissibility and impact of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 in England

Nicholas G. Davies et al.

Summary: A new variant of SARS-CoV-2 has emerged in England, with a higher reproduction number and potential for large resurgences of COVID-19 cases. Without stringent control measures, it is projected that COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in England for the first 6 months of 2021 will exceed those in 2020. The variant has spread globally and exhibited similar transmission increases in Denmark, Switzerland, and the United States.

Self-reported Taste and Smell Disorders in Patients with COVID-19: Distinct Features in China

Jia Song et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the frequencies of nasal symptoms in COVID-19 patients, finding that loss of taste was significantly associated with severity of the disease, unlike loss of smell. Interleukin-6 and lactate dehydrogenase serum levels were positively correlated with loss of taste scores, and most patients recovered from smell and taste dysfunction within 2 weeks.

COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical intervention portfolio effectiveness and risk communication predominance

Louis Yat Hin Chan et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of NPI portfolios on COVID-19 at a macroscopic scale and found that risk communication and returning to normal life were the most and least effective measures among different countries. The results demonstrate that implemented interventions have a clear timing effect on infection dynamics, and the optimal effectiveness of different NPI portfolios may be related to specific country socio-environmental factors.

Reduced sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2 variant Delta to antibody neutralization

Delphine Planas et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617 Delta variant, first identified in India in 2020, has become dominant in some regions and is spreading to many countries. This variant shows resistance to certain monoclonal antibodies and antibodies in convalescent sera, as well as reduced neutralization by some COVID-19 vaccines. Administration of two doses of the vaccine is needed for a neutralizing response against the Delta variant.
