PAH-degrading rhizobacteria of Lepironia articulata for phytoremediation enhancement

Nadya Hussin Al Sbani et al.

Summary: This study identified plant rhizobacteria capable of degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aiding in enhancing the phytoremediation of PAH-contaminated wastewater. The rhizobacteria isolated from the rhizosphere of Lepironia articulata showed promising potential for degrading PAHs and improving remediation efficiency.

Biodegradation of PCB congeners by Paraburkholderia xenovorans LB400 in presence and absence of sediment during lab bioreactor experiments

Christian M. Bako et al.

Summary: The experiments showed that the aerobic PCB-degrading bacteria Paraburkholderia xenovorans LB400 can rapidly degrade most PCB congeners when they are freely dissolved in liquid, but cannot degrade PCB congeners with three or more chlorine substituents in sediment slurry. Using GC/MS-MS triple quadrupole spectrometry, the study distinguished between physical (sorption to cells) and biological removal mechanisms, and illuminated how microorganisms like LB400 can selectively transform lower-chlorinated congeners over time.

A constructed wetland system for bio-polishing palm oil mill effluent and its future research opportunities

Maryam 'Aqilah Norhan et al.

Summary: The study showed that Scirpus grossus plants were effective in removing TSS from palm oil mill effluent, with a higher removal rate in the free-surface system compared to the sub-surface system on day 7. The presence of suspended solids in the effluent influenced the sedimentation rate, impacting TSS removal efficiency. COD removal was not significantly different between systems or with or without plants, indicating the importance of the sand medium in COD removal.
