Detecting adulteration of stingless bee honey using untargeted 1H NMR metabolomics with chemometrics

Chin-Hong Yong et al.

Summary: With the rising popularity of stingless bee honey in the Malaysian market, there is a growing concern about adulteration. The current detection method is inadequate in identifying adulterants, leading to the proposal of untargeted H-1 NMR metabolomics. Through principal component analysis and discriminant analysis, it is possible to differentiate adulterated stingless bee honey from authentic ones effectively.

Low-field benchtop NMR spectroscopy: status and prospects in natural product analysis†

Teris Andre van Beek

Summary: Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers have re-entered the market in recent years, offering commercial availability for natural products analysis. Despite limited spectral resolution, their low costs and ease of operation make them attractive for various applications in quality control, forensics, and food research. The niche market of LF-NMR is rapidly developing, with new instruments constantly being introduced.

Dietary quercetin impacts the concentration of pesticides in honey bees

Hamidreza Ardalani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of dietary quercetin on the concentration of pesticides in honey bees. The results showed that quercetin intake can reduce the concentration of imidacloprid in bees, but had no significant effect on tebuconazole and tau-fluvalinate concentrations.

Colony-level pesticide exposure affects honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) royal jelly production and nutritional composition

Joseph P. Milone et al.

Summary: Exposure of honey bee colonies to multi-pesticide pollen treatment affects the quality and quantity of royal jelly synthesized by nurse bees, leading to reductions in key nutrients and provisioned amount per queen cell. The impact of pesticides on royal jelly nutritional composition outweighs the weight of royal jelly provisioned per queen, highlighting indirect effects on queen developmental nutrition and social consequences of nurse bee glandular degeneration.

Evaluation of Fumaric Acid and Maleic Acid as Internal Standards for NMR Analysis of Protein Precipitated Plasma, Serum, and Whole Blood

G. A. Nagana Gowda et al.

Summary: The performance of fumaric acid and maleic acid as potential internal standards was investigated for accurate quantitation of metabolites in human blood samples using NMR spectroscopy, revealing fumaric acid as a robust standard for all three biospecimens and maleic acid as suitable for plasma and serum. This study provides new opportunities for improved and accurate quantitation of metabolites in human blood samples and strengthens efforts to combine and compare NMR and MS based metabolite data for metabolomics research.

Transcriptomic Responses of the Honey Bee Brain to Infection with Deformed Wing Virus

Marie C. Pizzorno et al.

Summary: Experimental infection of bees with DWV resulted in increased expression of genes involved in innate immunity and decreased expression of genes involved in cellular communication. NMR metabolomics showed a significant increase in proline levels in DWV-infected brains, consistent with the presence of antimicrobial peptides.

Metabolomics unveils the influence of dietary phytochemicals on residual pesticide concentrations in honey bees

Hamidreza Ardalani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of dietary phytochemical composition on the residual concentration of three pesticides in honey bees using untargeted metabolomics. The results revealed that dietary phytochemical composition significantly influenced the concentration of residual pesticides in honey bees, with flavonoids reducing the concentration of imidacloprid and tau-fluvalinate.
