Digital light processing stereolithography of hydroxyapatite scaffolds with bone-like architecture, permeability, and mechanical properties

Francesco Baino et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the additive manufacturing and characterization of hydroxyapatite scaffolds mimicking the trabecular architecture of cancellous bone. A novel approach using stereolithographic technology and 3D reconstructions of polymeric sponges as templates was proposed. The fabricated scaffolds showed promising mechanical properties and mass transport behaviors, making them suitable for bone tissue engineering applications.

Summary: Osseointegration is defined as a stable and functional union between bone and a material's surface. Studies show that ceramic materials are strong competitors in bone tissue engineering, with ceramic scaffolds enhancing the osseointegration phenomenon. The manufacturing processes of ceramic scaffolds, such as 3D printing and selective laser sintering, affect the scaffold's geometric parameters and, subsequently, its mechanical properties.

Rational design of bioceramic scaffolds with tuning pore geometry by stereolithography: Microstructure evaluation and mechanical evolution

Fengling Lu et al.

Summary: The pore geometry of Ca-silicate bioceramic scaffolds significantly influences their structural strength, with different pore shapes showing varying compressive and flexural resistance. The relationship between pore structure and mechanical properties can be controlled through design to tailor scaffold bio-dissolution, demonstrating the potential for optimizing porous bioceramic designs for required structural and mechanical stability.

Digital light processing strength-strong ultra-thin bioceramic scaffolds for challengeable orbital bone regeneration and repair in Situ

Jingyi Wang et al.

Summary: Ultrathin scaffolds with high-precision pore structure and appreciable osteogenic activity were developed for orbital bone repair using digital light processing (DLP) stereolithography. Magnesium-substituting wollastonite (CSi-Mg) bioceramic scaffolds exhibited tunable mechanical properties and enhanced osteogenic activity, promoting new bone ingrowth and efficient repair of orbital bone defects in rabbits. This study demonstrates the potential of dilute magnesium doping in bioceramic for developing mechanically reliable scaffolds with high porosity and bioactivity for orbital bone reconstruction.

Bone tissue regeneration: The role of finely tuned pore architecture of bioactive scaffolds before clinical translation

Ronghuan Wu et al.

Summary: The spatial dimension of pores and interconnection within macroporous scaffolds plays a critical role in facilitating cell migration and bone tissue growth. This study evaluated biological performances of nonstoichiometric bioceramic scaffolds with varying pore dimensions in a femoral bone defect model, showing that scaffolds with larger pore sizes promote neotissue ingrowth and enhanced bone regeneration and remodeling. These findings provide important insights into how porous architecture influences bone regeneration in vivo and suggest potential implications for optimizing scaffold design using advanced additive manufacturing techniques.

Effects of different aperture-sized type I collagen/silk fibroin scaffolds on the proliferation and differentiation of human dental pulp cells

Shihui Jiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of different aperture-sized type I collagen/silk fibroin (CSF) scaffolds on human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) proliferation and differentiation. The scaffolds improved cell adhesion and proliferation, as well as significantly increased ALP activity, suggesting their potential as candidates for dentine-pulp complex regeneration.
