DEG 15, an update of the Database of Essential Genes that includes built-in analysis tools

Hao Luo et al.

Summary: Essential genes are necessary for an organism's survival under specific conditions. Recent advancements in identifying human essential genes have been driven by the successful use of CRISPR/Cas9 technology. The release of DEG 15 database shows significant progress, with a large increase in the number of essential genes in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. The database offers built-in analysis modules and customizable BLAST tools for enhanced essential gene analysis.

UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Anisakis simplex: Immunomodulatory effects of larval antigens on the activation of Toll like Receptors

Vega Zamora et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the mechanisms by which Anisakis simplex modifies its host immune system through larval antigens interacting with Toll-Like-Receptors (TLRs). The findings showed that the larval antigens had specific mechanisms to modify the innate responses of the host, influencing different inflammatory responses in different mouse strains. The results contribute to a better understanding of allergy-related diseases and specific mechanisms of A. simplex immune responses.

Molecular characterization and expression analysis of annexin B3 and B38 as secretory proteins in Echinococcus granulosus

Hongyu Song et al.

Summary: Cystic echinococcosisis a parasitic zoonotic disease that poses a threat to public health and animal husbandry. Annexins are a family of phospholipid-binding proteins with calcium ion-binding activity. The cloned annexin genes have calcium-binding sites and strong immunoreactivity to serum from infected animals. They are expressed in various stages of the parasite and are found near the hydatid cyst in liver tissues.

Insights into the role of deep-sea squids of the genus Histioteuthis (Histioteuthidae) in the life cycle of ascaridoid parasites in the Central Mediterranean Sea waters

Marialetizia Palomba et al.

Summary: The study identified Anisakis physeteris and an unidentified species of the genus Lappetascaris in two species of squid captured in the Central Mediterranean Sea. Results indicated that Lappetascaris larvae predominantly infect the mantle musculature of umbrella squid. The study suggests that both squid species may act as transmitting hosts of Lappetascaris larvae to top predator fishes.

An Hotterbeekx et al.

Summary: Filarial nematodes secrete bioactive molecules that can potentially manipulate host biology by modulating the host immune system. These secreted molecules play a key role in infection and pathology, making them important targets for further investigation and understanding their impact on the human host.

Molecular and evolutionary basis for survival, its failure, and virulence factors of the zoonotic nematode Anisakis pegreffii*

Zeljka Trumbic et al.

Summary: Parasitism is a successful life strategy that has evolved multiple times, with accidental infections providing opportunities for lateral host switches. However, when directed towards phylogenetically distant hosts like humans, certain parasites may fail to mature due to host immunity. The study on Anisakis larvae migrating through rats and fish reveals differences in gene expression patterns, shedding light on the evolution of nematode virulence and potential drug therapy targets.

The Role of Calmodulin vs. Synaptotagmin in Exocytosis

Renhao Xue et al.

Summary: Exocytosis is a Ca2+-regulated process that involves the participation of Ca2+ sensors, with synaptotagmin acting as the primary sensor in the final stage of membrane fusion triggered by a Ca2+ boost. Calmodulin, on the other hand, plays a role in the earlier exocytotic steps by acting as a high affinity Ca2+ sensor. Both calmodulin and synaptotagmin play complementary roles throughout the exocytosis process.

Recognition Pattern of the Fasciola hepatica Excretome/Secretome during the Course of an Experimental Infection in Sheep by 2D Immunoproteomics

David Becerro-Recio et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the immune response elicited in sheep during an experimental infection by analyzing the excretory/secretory products from adult worms of Fasciola hepatica. Ten different immunogenic proteins from FhES were identified, with some proteins recognized throughout different stages of the infection. Additionally, four FhES proteins were identified for the first time as non-immunogenic proteins, providing insights into host/parasite relationships and potential drug target candidates of F. hepatica.
