A molecular detection study in horses from Veracruz, Mexico revealed the endemicity of Theileria equi in the region. Summary: Equine piroplasmosis caused by Theileria equi, T. haneyi, and Babesia caballi is a globally distributed disease transmitted by ixodid ticks. Utilizing a combination of nPCR and cELISA improved the detection of horses exposed to these parasites, with a higher prevalence of T. equi compared to B. caballi or T. haneyi. Additionally, ticks infesting sampled horses were identified as potential vectors for these parasites, indicating the need for further studies on competent tick species in Nigeria.
