Comparative Effectiveness of Intravenous Azithromycin Versus Erythromycin Stimulating Antroduodenal Motility in Children

Edward B. Mougey et al.

Summary: This study compared the pharmacodynamic effectiveness of azithromycin and erythromycin in pediatric patients and found no significant difference in their effects on antral and duodenal motility. Azithromycin can be considered as an acceptable alternative to erythromycin for promoting upper gastrointestinal tract motility in children.

A systematic review and meta-analysis reveal that Campylobacter spp. and antibiotic resistance are widespread in humans in sub-Saharan Africa

Delfina F. Hlashwayo et al.

Summary: Campylobacter spp. are prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, with Campylobacter jejuni being the most common species. The bacteria are mostly found in children, and have been linked to acute flaccid paralysis and urinary tract infections in some cases. While there is a higher prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in HIV-infected patients, the statistical significance is not clear. High levels of antibiotic resistance, particularly to erythromycin and tetracycline, have been reported.

Antimicrobial Usage in Commercial and Domestic Poultry Farming in Two Communities in the Ashanti Region of Ghana

Ellis Kobina Paintsil et al.

Summary: The study showed a higher percentage of commercial poultry farms in Ghana using antimicrobials compared to domestic farms. Commercial farmers were more likely to follow instructions on antimicrobials compared to domestic poultry keepers. It calls for stricter regulations and education to limit misuse of antimicrobials in domestic poultry farming.

Summary: In Ethiopia, the pooled prevalence of Campylobacter species among children under 5 years of age was 10%, with factors such as contact with domestic animals, illiterate mothers, consumption of animal products, and the status of mothers' personal hygiene significantly associated with the prevalence of Campylobacter species.
