This study focuses on the impact of electric vehicles on the electric grid and the optimal allocation of rapid charging stations, as well as presenting future trends and current challenges. A comprehensive review provides insights into the electrification trend of electric vehicles in the transportation sector.
The escalation in the usage of conventional fuel in the transportation sector resulted in rapid depletion of the same. Thus, the past decade saw the electrification of the transportation division as the primary research area. It has been seen in the past few years that Electric Vehicles (EV) are displacing the internal combustion engine at a rapid pace. The escalation in EV density on the road caused a substantial adverse effect on the existing electric grid and led to grid reliability issues. With an increase in the charging station to cater to Electric Vehicle's needs, some countermeasures are required to be taken to overcome the adverse effects. A comprehensive review is plotted concerning the current EV scenario, charging infrastructure, EV impacts, and Electric Vehicles optimal allocation provisioning in this paper. This paper especially presents the study on the optimal allocation of rapid charging stations based on economic benefits and grid impacts. Adoption challenges that are being faced are also discussed. In contrast, future trends in the field, such as the procurement of energy from renewable energy sources and the benefit of the vehicle to grid technology, are presented and summarized.
