Comparison of forced convective heat transfer between pillar and real foam structure under high Reynolds number

Mingrui Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates forced convective heat transfer in metal foams using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with Kelvin cells and foam structures of different porosities and cells per inch values. The results show that factors like throat area and microstructure significantly impact pressure drop, and heat transfer behavior can be improved by increasing pores per inch and optimizing joint connections in the Kelvin cells. Optimization of throat area and skeleton shape is a potential method for enhancing comprehensive heat-transfer performance in Kelvin cells.

Analysis of thermal performance of an improved shell and helically coiled heat exchanger

Azim Dogus Tuncer et al.

Summary: A new modification involving the integration of a hollow tube for cold fluid inlet was proposed to enhance the performance of a shell and helically coiled heat exchanger. The modified heat exchanger design successfully regulated fluid flow, improving heat transfer efficiency. The experimental results showed an average difference of 8% between simulation and actual performance, with overall heat transfer coefficients ranging from 1600-3150 W/m(2)K for the shell side, and 5700-13,400 W/m(2)K for the coil side.

Thermal performance assessment of a thermal energy storage tank: effect of aspect ratio and tilted angle

Xiaohu Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the inclination angle of the latent heat energy storage tank significantly affected the melting heat transfer, with the fastest melting rate depending on the tank's aspect ratio. For aspect ratios below 1.0, the optimal inclination angle was 0 degrees, while for aspect ratios above 2.0, the fastest melting rate was achieved at an inclination of 60 degrees.

Simulation of forced convective heat transfer in Kelvin cells with optimized skeletons

Mingrui Sun et al.

Summary: The optimization of pore structure for metal foam can effectively reduce pressure drop and improve heat transfer performance. The study shows that increasing the ratio of long axis to short axis leads to a decrease in pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient, with pressure drop reducing more significantly. As the velocity increases, the effect of the ratio on overall heat transfer performance becomes more pronounced. Elliptical skeletons in metal foam help achieve more uniform velocity distribution and lowered pressure drop.

Influence of fin parameters on the melting behavior in a horizontal shell-and-tube latent heat storage unit with longitudinal fins

Hongyang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the melting behavior of phase change material with longitudinal fins in a latent heat storage unit, utilizing two-dimensional models with natural convection and optimizing structural parameters. Strategies to improve heat transfer intensity in the hard-melting region at the bottom of the tube are implemented, demonstrating that thickening bottom fins and thinning top fins can accelerate the melting process.

Simulations of melting performance enhancement for a PCM embedde d in metal periodic structures

Chunrong Zhao et al.

Summary: The idea of embedding highly thermally conductive wire nets with periodic structures into phase change materials to improve their thermal conductivity has been proposed. Numerical simulations have shown that critical cell size, cell height, and interface gap thickness all play a role in heat transfer within the PCM. Different metal materials such as copper and stainless steel have different critical pores per inch (PPI), and shorter cell heights with lower porosities can shorten melting times.

Chunrong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study examines the use of graphite foam inserts to improve the melting/solidification efficiency of high-temperature phase change materials. By evaluating different porosities and filling scenarios, it was found that higher foam porosity significantly reduces the overall melting/solidification time, making it a preferred design choice.

Effect of perforated fins on the heat-transfer performance of vertical shell-and-tube latent heat energy storage unit

Hongyang Li et al.

Summary: The study proposes three-dimensional perforated-fin models to enhance the heat storage performance in latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) units. By varying the hole diameter and location, it is observed that these parameters significantly affect the charging performance. Increasing the hole diameter strengthens natural convection but weakens thermal conduction simultaneously.
