An overview of amphoteric ion exchange membranes for vanadium redox flow batteries

Summary: Vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) is a promising large-scale electrical energy storage unit, with its core part being the amphoteric ion exchange membrane (AIEM) that separates electrolytes and conducts H+. AIEM, with cation and anion groups, has excellent performances but its quality depends on the chemical structure of polymers. It is important for AIEM to have ion selectivity to prevent vanadium ion crossover and reduce battery capacity.

Recent Advances of Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Summary: This article introduces the structure and material compositions of asymmetric supercapacitors, which are classified into two types: electric double-layer capacitor//pseudocapacitive-type and electric double-layer capacitor//battery-type hybrid, using carbon materials and different metal oxides/hydroxides as anodes and cathodes. Recent advances show that Li-ion-based ASCs have great potential, and the challenges and prospects for the development of ASCs are pointed out.

Additionally, large-voltage microsupercapacitors are highlighted for next-generation integration devices.

Layer-by-layer assembled free-standing and flexible nanocellulose/porous Co3O4 polyhedron hybrid film as supercapacitor electrodes

Summary: Dual-layer films of free-standing nanocellulose/ZIF-67 derived porous Co3O4 polyhedrons were successfully assembled using a water-based paper-making process. Nanocellulose served as a flexible substrate and reduced the cost by replacing expensive polymer binders, while the NFC/porous Co3O4 polyhedron composite layer acted as a free-standing electrode with higher capacitance and power density. The hybrid film showed good flexibility and foldability with increasing NFC content, providing insights into flexible and free-standing supercapacitor electrodes derived from MOF-derived metal oxide powders.
