Clinical Characteristics of Refractory Coronavirus Disease 2019 in Wuhan, China

Pingzheng Mo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of patients with refractory COVID-19, finding that these patients were older, more likely to be male, and had more underlying comorbid conditions. Patients with refractory disease required more aggressive treatments such as oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation.

Overexpression of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor ACE2 is induced by cigarette smoke in bronchial and alveolar epithelia

Aibin Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the expression and location of ACE2 in a cigarette smoke-exposed mouse model and human lung tissues, finding significant overexpression of ACE2 in bronchial and alveolar epithelial cells in smokers. Decreased ACE2 expression was observed in ex-smokers and correlated positively with HIF-1 alpha, iNOS, and 4-HNE levels.

SARS-CoV-2 in pleural fluid in a kidney transplant patient

David Bennett et al.

Summary: This case report describes a kidney transplant patient with COVID-19 pneumonia who developed pleural effusion, with cytology demonstrating a cytopathic effect of the virus on mesothelial cells in the pleural fluid. The findings suggest that the pleura can be a site of viral replication and direct pathological effect of SARS-CoV-2 on cells.

Circuits between infected macrophages and T cells in SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia

Rogan A. Grant et al.

Summary: The study found that patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 have enriched T cells and monocytes in the alveolar space, suggesting that the virus infects alveolar macrophages and induces T cell production of interferon-, leading to inflammation and persistent alveolitis.

A Potential Role of Interleukin 10 in COVID-19 Pathogenesis

Ligong Lu et al.

Summary: One unique feature of the cytokine storm in COVID-19 is the significant elevation of IL-10, which was initially believed to be a negative feedback mechanism to suppress inflammation. However, clinical evidence suggests that early proinflammatory IL-10 elevation may actually play a pathological role in the severity of COVID-19.

Differential Signaling and Virus Production in Calu-3 Cells and Vero Cells upon SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Byoung Kwon Park et al.

Summary: The study reveals that different cell lines, Vero and Calu-3, exhibit varying cellular responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection, resulting in different virus production and apoptosis rates. In Calu-3 cells, inhibitors targeting STAT3 phosphorylation and dimerization have a certain effect on reducing virus production. Therefore, evaluating cellular responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection in different cell lines is crucial for studying virus treatments.

Clinical characteristics of COVID-19 complicated with pleural effusion

Na Zhan et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed 476 COVID-19 inpatients and found that patients with PE had higher severity and mortality rates, as well as longer hospital stay time. Laboratory findings showed that patients with PE had higher levels of white blood cells, neutrophils, lactic dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein, and D-dimer, and lower levels of lymphocytes, platelets, hemoglobin, partial pressure of oxygen, and oxygen saturation. Additionally, pleural effusion, lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer, and total bilirubin (TBIL) were identified as potential risk factors for critical COVID-19.

Tuberculous Fibrosis Enhances Tumorigenic Potential via the NOX4-Autophagy Axis

Seong Ji Woo et al.

Summary: This study reveals the important role of NOX4 in mediating the interaction between tuberculosis fibrosis and lung cancer, suggesting that NOX4-P62 could be a potential therapeutic target for tuberculosis fibrosis-associated lung cancer. The NOX4-autophagy axis regulated by tuberculosis fibrosis enhances tumorigenic potential, providing insights into the mechanism by which tuberculosis affects lung cancer development.

SARS-CoV-2 infection of primary human lung epithelium for COVID-19 modeling and drug discovery

Apoorva Mulay et al.

Summary: This study established primary human lung epithelial infection models to investigate the initial responses of proximal and distal lung epithelium to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The findings showed that epithelial cells in different areas of the lungs are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, leading to a cell-autonomous proinflammatory response, with remdesivir proving effective in suppressing viral infection and replication.

Mechanisms of Peritoneal Fibrosis: Focus on Immune Cells-Peritoneal Stroma Interactions

Michela Terri et al.

Summary: Peritoneal fibrosis is characterized by abnormal production of extracellular matrix proteins leading to progressive thickening of the peritoneal membrane, which may be caused by insults such as peritoneal dialysis and abdominal surgery. This process can cause acute/chronic inflammation and injury, resulting in fibrosis, angiogenesis, and vasculopathy in the peritoneum.
