Enhancement of microalgae bio-oil quality via hydrothermal liquefaction using functionalized carbon nanotubes

Jianwen Lu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that carbon nanotubes are promising catalysts for improving the quality of bio-oil from hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae, as they can increase hydrogen content, reduce oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur content, as well as enhance higher heating value and low-boiling fraction of the bio-oil.

Insight into acid-base bifunctional catalysts for microalgae liquefaction and bio-oil pyrolysis: Product characteristics, energy recovery and kinetics

Cong Yu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to enhance hydrocarbon yield of Chlorella liquefaction and consecutive upgrading using a new class of acid-base bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts. The catalysts were prepared by grafting -SO3H and -NH2 groups on the surface of clin/SBA-15, leading to improved oil yields and deoxygenation rates. The activation energy for pyrolysis of noncatalytic LBO to DSO was significantly reduced due to the synergistic effect of acid and base sites on the catalyst, showing great potential for algae-based fuel production.
