Mechanics of unusual soft network materials with rotatable structural nodes

Jianxing Liu et al.

Summary: Soft network materials with filamentary horseshoe microstructures are of practical interest in flexible, bio-integrated electronics due to their ability to accurately reproduce nonlinear stress-strain responses of biological tissues. Previous studies mainly focused on mechanical responses before fracture, while neglecting utmost strength and stretchability. This paper presents a novel type of soft network materials with rotatable lattice nodes to enhance deformability.

In-plane low thermal expansion of NiTi via controlled cross rolling

Qiao Li et al.

Summary: Controlled cross rolling (CroR) can achieve in-plane low coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) of polycrystalline NiTi sheets, significantly reducing CTEs close to zero over a wide temperature range. The physical mechanism behind the in-plane low TE is explored through in situ neutron diffraction and a theoretical model, offering a new pathway for obtaining shape memory alloys (SMAs) with low thermal expansion properties.

Metamaterials with a controllable thermal-mechanical stability: Mechanical designs, theoretical predictions and experimental demonstrations

Huabin Yu et al.

Summary: This paper systematically studies a design concept of metamaterial capable of offering a tailorable CTE and demonstrates a remarkable zero CTE result in experiments. The theoretical model and experimental verification show that this metamaterial design can provide excellent thermal-mechanical stability effectively.
