A coupled UV photolysis-biodegradation process for the treatment of decabrominated diphenyl ethers in an aerobic novel bioslurry reactor

Yi-Tang Chang et al.

Summary: The study investigated a combined UV-photolysis-biodegradation process for treating commercial flame retardants commonly found in soils and sediments. Results indicated that the novel bioslurry bioreactor with simultaneous LED UVA irradiation and mixed bacterial culture application maximized the degradation of BDE-209.

Summary: The study identified two bacterial enrichment cultures capable of transforming DON into highly toxic metabolites for plants, and observed a cytotoxic effect on intestinal porcine epithelial cells. Liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry revealed an unknown compound tentatively characterized as a metabolite of DON.
