Optimization of whole-cell immobilization system constructed with two-species microorganism and its ability of tetracycline wastewater treatment

X. Wu et al.

Summary: Microbial technology, specifically using Bacillus cereus strains, combined with fungal immobilization, showed high efficiency in degrading tetracycline and removing it from contaminated water. The combination of inactivated Penicillium chrysogenumY5 as the immobilization skeleton and inoculated Bacillus cereus at the logarithmic growth phase proved to be the optimal condition for achieving a high percentage of COD degradation and tetracycline removal. Adsorption of Bacillus cereus cells on the fungus surface and the presence of hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl and amino groups in the immobilization pellets were key factors contributing to the success of tetracycline removal from wastewater.

Complete genome sequence and comparative genome analysis of Alcanivorax sp. IO_7, a marine alkane-degrading bacterium isolated from hydrothermally-influenced deep seawater of southwest Indian ridge

Rupesh Kumar Sinha et al.

Summary: The genome of Alcanivorax sp. IO_7, a deep-sea bacteria capable of degrading alkanes, was sequenced and analyzed, revealing gene clusters for alkane degradation and biosurfactant production. The strain showed the ability to grow on hexadecane as its sole carbon source, suggesting efficient hydrocarbon degradation mechanisms. Presence of genes for heavy metal and multidrug resistance indicate survival strategies in hydrothermally influenced deep-sea environment.

An cost-effective production of bacterial exopolysaccharide emulsifier for oil pollution bioremediation

Mingchang Li et al.

Summary: The thermotolerant bacterium Geobacillus stearothermophilus DG1 was cultured with molasses supplemented with NaNO3 and (NH4)2HPO3 to produce exopolysaccharides (EPSs) for bioremediation of oil contamination. The EPSs showed high content of carbohydrates, proteins, and uronic acids and exhibited excellent emulsification ability and stability, along with the capability to degrade hazardous constituents of crude oil.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
