Geometric characterization of anomalous Landau levels of isolated flat bands

Summary: This study predicts a system with isolated flat bands where anomalous Landau level spreading appears, despite the wave function being nonsingular. The anomalous Landau level spreading in isolated flat bands is governed by the cross-gap Berry connection, and symmetry imposes strong constraints on the Landau level spreading of flat bands.

General construction of flat bands with and without band crossings based on wave function singularity

Summary: In this work, a systematic method of constructing flat-band models with or without band crossings is developed. The construction scheme utilizes the symmetry and spatial shape of a compact localized state (CLS) and the singularity of the flat-band wave function obtained by a Fourier transform of the CLS (FT-CLS). By introducing orthogonal basis molecular orbitals corresponding to the FT-CLS, a tight-binding Hamiltonian with a flat band can be obtained systematically for any lattice. This construction scheme provides a powerful theoretical framework for studying exotic properties of gapped and gapless flat bands arising from their wave function singularities.
