A UPLC-MS/MS method for the determination of oxidative stress biomarkers in amniotic fluid

Mari Merce Cascant-Vilaplana et al.

Summary: This study presents an analytical method for quantifying biomarkers of oxidative stress-derived damage to proteins and DNA in amniotic fluid samples. The method achieves high accuracy, precision, and sensitivity, making it suitable for research on oxidative stress-related complications during pregnancy.

Corpus callosum size by neurosonography in fetuses with congenital heart defect and relationship with expected pattern of brain oxygen supply

M. Perez-Cruz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate corpus callosum size in fetuses with isolated major congenital heart defects using neurosonography. Findings revealed that fetuses with major CHD had a smaller corpus callosum compared to controls, particularly in the subgroup with expected poorer brain oxygen supply. This suggests sonographic corpus callosum size could serve as a clinically feasible marker of abnormal white matter development in congenital heart defects.

Fetal brain growth and risk of postnatal white matter injury in critical congenital heart disease

Shabnam Peyvandi et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between delayed brain development in fetuses with certain heart conditions and their susceptibility to postnatal white matter injury. Lower total brain volume in late gestation was associated with increased risk of white matter injury in fetuses with d-transposition of the great arteries, but not in those with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Rate of brain growth was not found to be a risk factor for white matter injury in either group, indicating different implications for postnatal risk of white matter injury.

The association between flow and oxygenation and cortical development in fetuses with congenital heart defects using a brain-age prediction algorithm

Sheila M. P. Everwijn et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 616 ultrasound volumes of 162 CHD cases and 75 controls, finding significant delay in cortex maturation in CHD cases with normal blood flow and low oxygen saturation. The study suggests delayed brain-age in certain congenital heart defect cases compared to controls, raising questions about clinical relevance due to small differences.

Novel Mechanistic Insights and Potential Therapeutic Impact of TRPC6 in Neurovascular Coupling and Ischemic Stroke

Shashank Shekhar et al.

Summary: Ischemic stroke is a disabling disease with increasing global burden and no effective treatments available to limit or reverse brain ischemic injury. Recent findings suggest that TRPC6 channels may play a role in protecting neuronal tissue, but their effects on non-neuronal cells and the blood-brain barrier require further investigation.

Summary: Severe small-for-gestational-age (sSGA) infants exhibit increased oxidative stress levels at birth, and the severity of fetal growth restriction is significantly correlated with oxidative stress levels in sSGA infants.

Oxidative stress response in children undergoing cardiac surgery: Utility of the clearance of isoprostanes

Stephanie Hadley et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the oxidative stress response in infants undergoing cardiac surgery by measuring urinary free 8-iso-PGF2 alpha levels. It was found that neonatal patients experience a significant post-operative oxidative stress response, which may play an important role in postoperative morbidity. Patients with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) undergoing arterial switch operations demonstrated the highest post-operative oxidative stress response.
