Omicron escapes the majority of existing SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies

Yunlong Cao et al.

Summary: The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 contains 15 mutations in the receptor-binding domain, leading to evasion of over 85% of tested neutralizing antibodies. Different epitope groups of neutralizing antibodies are affected to varying degrees by single mutations of Omicron. Antibodies targeting the conserved region of sarbecovirus remain most effective against Omicron.

The spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 induces heme oxygenase-1: Pathophysiologic implications

Raman Deep Singh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the expression of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 in kidney cells can simulate maladaptive and adaptive responses relevant to acute kidney injury (AKI) in COVID-19. Spike protein expression upregulates potentially nephrotoxic genes, as well as the cytoprotective gene HO-1 and relevant signaling pathways. Quercetin, an HO-1 inducer, shows potential as a clinically feasible protective strategy in AKI associated with COVID-19.

Neuroinvasion of SARS-CoV-2 in human and mouse brain

Summary: The study showed through three approaches that SARS-CoV-2 is capable of infecting brain neurons, leading to metabolic changes and pathological features without triggering type I interferon responses. These results provide evidence for the neuroinvasive capacity of SARS-CoV-2 and the unexpected consequence of direct infection of neurons by the virus.

Summary: This study established primary human lung epithelial infection models to investigate the initial responses of proximal and distal lung epithelium to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The findings showed that epithelial cells in different areas of the lungs are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, leading to a cell-autonomous proinflammatory response, with remdesivir proving effective in suppressing viral infection and replication.
