Hydrogen peroxide signalling mediates fertilization and post-fertilization development in the red alga Bostrychia moritziana

Eunyoung Shim et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling plays a crucial role in red algal fertilization, with H2O2 acting as a signaling molecule that regulates gene expression and post-fertilization development possibly through Ca2+ channel activation. NADPH oxidase homologues are involved in fertilization process, and pre-treatment or perturbation of plants' redox state can impact post-fertilization development.

Protective effects of melatonin and l-carnitine against methotrexate-induced toxicity in isolated rat hepatocytes

Lamiaa A. Khatab et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that melatonin and L-carnitine can effectively protect isolated rat hepatocytes against methotrexate-induced toxicity by exerting antioxidative, antiinflammatory, and antiapoptotic effects. Further research on the clinical pharmacological and toxicological effects of these two drugs in patients receiving methotrexate is recommended.

Abnormal steroidogenesis, oxidative stress, and reprotoxicity following prepubertal exposure to butylparaben in mice and protective effect ofCurcuma longa

Chaman Ara et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to BP led to stable body weight in mice, but a significant increase in gonadal weight, elevated levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, decreased estrogen levels in treated females, disrupted sperm count and motility, abnormal sperm morphology, decreased testosterone levels, reduced number of antral follicles and increased lipid peroxidation. Co-administration of BP and turmeric resulted in fewer biochemical and histological deviations, indicating turmeric's potential antioxidant effects against BP-induced oxidative stress and reprotoxicity in mice.

The Effects of Red Light on Mammalian Sperm Rely upon the Color of the Straw and the Medium Used

L-amino acid oxidase 1 in sperm is associated with reproductive performance in male mice and bulls

Haolin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the L-amino acid oxidase encoded by the Lao1 gene plays an important role in male reproduction, with the lack of this gene resulting in fewer embryos and offspring in male mice. Additionally, deficiency in LAO1 in sperm may cause male subfertility, as its localization in the sperm acrosome affects sperm viability and morphology.

Evidence that extrapancreatic insulin production is involved in the mediation of sperm survival

R. John Aitken et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests the presence of insulin receptors on mammalian sperm and male germ line, with insulin playing a role in sperm motility and potential release from sperm cells. Furthermore, the endometrium is also capable of producing and releasing insulin, highlighting the importance of extra-pancreatic insulin in the reproductive process.

NADPH Oxidase 5 and Melatonin: Involvement in Ram Sperm Capacitation

Sara Miguel-Jimenez et al.

Summary: This study found NOX5 in ram spermatozoa and demonstrated that melatonin can prevent changes related to sperm capacitation by modulating NOX5 activity. This suggests that melatonin plays a role in antioxidant defense in ram sperm by influencing NOX5 during capacitation.

Summary: The association of leukocytospermia with male fertility remains under debate. This study aimed to evaluate the association of leukocytospermia with sperm parameters, mitochondrial DNA variations, and oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines in Tunisian infertile men. The results showed a significant increase in DNA fragmentation, mitochondrial DNA substitutions, and oxidative stress levels in the leukocytospermic group compared to the non-leukocytospermic group.

Summary: The novel coronavirus, discovered in December 2019, has raised concerns about its potential impact on different organs, particularly the male reproductive system. Studies have shown that the testis is rich in ACE2, which could lead to male infertility. Current research is focused on understanding the short-term and long-term effects of the virus on the male reproductive system.
