Perturbation of the gut microbiome by Prevotella spp. enhances host susceptibility to mucosal inflammation

Aida Iljazovic et al.

Summary: The colonization of the intestinal microbiota with Prevotella genus has been linked to exacerbation of intestinal inflammation in mice. This study found that Prevotella intestinalis alters the composition and function of the ecosystem, leading to a reduction in short-chain fatty acids, specifically acetate, and a decrease in IL-18 levels, which exacerbates intestinal inflammation. Supplementation of IL-18 can alleviate the inflammation associated with Prevotella colonization.

Probiotic Supplementation Facilitates Recovery of 6-OHDA-Induced Motor Deficit via Improving Mitochondrial Function and Energy Metabolism

Bira Arumndari Nurrahma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that probiotic AP-32 and A-RM supplementations can restore energy metabolism by increasing SCFAs production and mitochondrial function. The restoration of mitochondrial function in the brain and muscles, along with improved energy metabolism, may also be potentiated by increased antioxidant levels and altered SCFAs profile. These findings suggest that probiotic AP-32 supplementation could serve as a potential alternative treatment strategy to prevent PD progression.

Pathophysiological Changes in the Enteric Nervous System of Rotenone-Exposed Mice as Early Radiological Markers for Parkinson's Disease

Gabriela Schaffernicht et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease affects the peripheral nervous system and the enteric nervous system, leading to functional changes and alterations in neuronal composition. The pesticide rotenone can induce changes in intestinal response to stimuli, particularly related to cholinergic and noradrenergic inputs. These early alterations could potentially serve as radiological markers for the detection of Parkinson's disease in its early stages.
