A general thermodynamic model for the long-period stacking ordered phases in magnesium alloys

Kai Xu et al.

Summary: A thermodynamic model for long-period stacking ordered phases (LPSOs) was proposed based on Xs(6)XL(8)-type L1(2) clusters and chemical composition variations. The Mg-Y-Zn system with three LPSOs was studied using CALPHAD approach and first-principles calculations, predicting two new three-phase equilibria that were validated by key experiments. The model-based descriptions will serve as the foundation for research and development of magnesium alloys.

Precipitate coarsening and its effects on the hot deformation behavior of the recently developed γ′-strengthened superalloys

Yuting Wu et al.

Summary: The coarsening behavior of gamma prime precipitates plays a significant role in the properties and hot deformation behavior of gamma'-strengthened superalloys. The particle size is crucial in the morphological evolution of precipitates, with different morphologies observed in different types of superalloys. The coarsening kinetics of precipitates are described using Lifshitz-Slyozof-Wagner (LSW) theory and Trans-Interface Diffusion Controlled (TIDC) theory in the research.

Direct observations of diffusion controlled microstructure transition in Mg-In/Mg-Ag ultrafine particles with enhanced hydrogen storage and hydrolysis properties

Jiawei Mao et al.

Summary: In this study, Mg(In) and Mg(Ag) solid-solution ultrafine particles were synthesized using a direct current (DC) arc-plasma method, and their hydrogen storage and hydrolysis behaviors were thoroughly investigated. The introduction of In or Ag into Mg significantly improved the hydrogen storage and hydrolysis properties of MgH2, providing more active sites for accelerating hydrogen yield. The microstructural analyses revealed that MgH2@MgIn and MgH2@MgAg composites were generated upon hydrogenation, leading to enhanced performances in hydrogen storage and hydrolysis.

Stabilization of low-valence transition metal towards advanced catalytic effects on the hydrogen storage performance of magnesium hydride

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study confirms that doping low-valence transition metals into MgO can weaken Mg-H bonds and reduce energy required for hydrogen desorption, resulting in superior catalytic activity compared to TMOs and MgO. The hybridization between Mg(Nb)O and MgH2 promotes charge transfer, enhancing hydrogen storage performance with reduced activation energy and increased reversible capacity.

Nucleation and growth mechanisms of γ phase with single-unit-cell height in Mg-RE-Zn(Ag) series alloys: a first-principles study

Junyuan Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the highly thermal stability of the gamma phase in Mg-RE-Zn (Ag) series alloys by using first-principles calculations. It is found that the formation of gamma phase introduces compressive strain and alters charge distribution in the alpha-Mg lattice, leading to easier solute atom diffusion near the alpha-Mg/gamma hetero-interface. These findings explain the origin of the nucleation/growth of gamma phase with single-unit-cell height.
