Anticancer effects of asiatic acid against doxorubicin-resistant breast cancer cells via an AMPK-dependent pathway in vitro

Zhu Zhu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the anticancer effects of asiatic acid in doxorubicin-resistant breast cancer cells and found that asiatic acid induced cell death through multiple pathways, including ROS production, ATP reduction, and modulation of adaptive immunity via intrinsic apoptosis, AMPK, PD-L1, and NF-kappa B pathways. Additionally, asiatic acid enhanced the sensitivity of doxorubicin-resistant cells to doxorubicin by improving P-gp function.

Ursolic acid inhibits multi-species biofilms developed by Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Streptococcus gordonii

Xiaoying Lyu et al.

Summary: The study found that UA exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against common oral streptococci, reduced EPS synthesis of oral streptococci, and suppressed gtf genes' expression. Furthermore, UA decreased the proportion of S. mutans in multi-species biofilms and showed low cytotoxicity against HOKs and HGEs.

Are Uropathogenic Bacteria Living in Multispecies Biofilm Susceptible to Active Plant Ingredient-Asiatic Acid?

Zuzanna Sycz et al.

Summary: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a serious health problem in the human population due to the chronic and recurrent nature of the infections. Bacteria causing UTIs form multi-species biofilms resistant to conventional antibiotics, leading researchers to search for plant-derived compounds as alternative strategies. Asiatic acid (AA) was found to decrease bacterial survival and biofilm formation, particularly against young biofilms. Further research is needed to understand AA's antibacterial mechanisms of action.

Antifungal activity and potential mechanism of Asiatic acid alone and in combination with fluconazole against Candida albicans

Yuting Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that Asiatic acid in combination with fluconazole had a synergistic effect on fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans both in vitro and in vivo. The combination reduced the minimum inhibitory concentration of fluconazole and inhibited hyphal growth, possibly through mechanisms such as inhibition of drug efflux pump and accumulation of reactive oxygen species. These findings provide new insights for overcoming drug resistance and offer potential for future development and application of Asiatic acid.
