Functions of RPM1-interacting protein 4 in plant immunity

Guangdong Zhao et al.

Summary: This review highlights the key role of RIN4 in plant immunity, including its involvement in the immune process through posttranslational modifications, regulation of PM H+ -ATPase activity, interaction with EXO70, and identification of RIN4-associated NLR proteins. The study provides new insights into enhancing the current understanding of the immune function of RIN4.

Mutations introduced in susceptibility genes through CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing confer increased late blight resistance in potatoes

Nam Phuong Kieu et al.

Summary: The use of pathogen-resistant cultivars is expected to increase yield and decrease fungicide use in agriculture. However, in potato breeding, increased resistance obtained via resistance genes (R-genes) is hampered because R-gene(s) are often specific for a pathogen race and can be quickly overcome by the evolution of the pathogen.

Mining Grapevine Downy Mildew Susceptibility Genes: A Resource for Genomics-Based Breeding and Tailored Gene Editing

Carlotta Pirrello et al.

Summary: Research has identified putative genes associated with downy mildew susceptibility and deep-sequenced four potential susceptibility genes in genetically diverse grapevine genotypes. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms impacting mutations were identified in 55 genotypes, and two haplotypes at the VvDMR6.2 gene were found significantly more represented in downy mildew resistant genotypes. These results provide valuable resources for grapevine and plant genetics, and could support genomic-assisted breeding programs and gene editing approaches for resistance to biotic stresses.

Stefania Pilati et al.

Summary: By utilizing transcriptomic data mining tool OneGenE, this study explored gene regulatory networks in grapevine and identified specific genes related to stilbenoids and lignin synthesis pathways. This approach can accelerate knowledge discovery and suggest new candidates for functional characterization and breeding programs.

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis of sweet basil candidate susceptibility gene ObDMR6 enhances downy mildew resistance

Jeremieh Abram R. Hasley et al.

Summary: Mutation of the susceptibility gene ObDMR6 in sweet basil using CRISPR/Cas9 resulted in transgene-free varieties with improved resistance to downy mildew, reducing sporangia production and pathogen biomass significantly compared to wild-type plants.

Loss of function of a DMR6 ortholog in tomato confers broad-spectrum disease resistance

Daniela Paula de Toledo Thomazella et al.

Summary: The study reveals that disabling susceptibility (S) genes is a promising alternative to confer durable and broad-spectrum disease resistance in breeding programs. In tomato, SlDMR6-1 shows enhanced resistance to various pathogens when up-regulated, accompanied by increased salicylic acid (SA) levels and transcriptional activation of immune responses.
