Changes in brown adipose tissue lipid mediator signatures with aging, obesity, and DHA supplementation in female mice

Elisa Felix-Soriano et al.

Summary: The dysfunction of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in aging and obesity may be related to a decrease in production of specialized proresolving lipid mediators (SPMs), especially under chronic unresolved inflammation. While a diet rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) can partially restore BAT dysfunction, it does not significantly alter the levels of specific SPMs. Despite increasing DHA-derived SPMs, it does not improve the response of BAT to cold exposure in obese-aged mice.

Mammary gland adipocytes in lactation cycle, obesity and breast cancer

Georgia Colleluori et al.

Summary: The mammary gland is an exocrine gland responsible for milk production in female mammals, composed mainly of epithelial cells and adipocytes. It displays highly plastic properties during different stages of the lactation cycle and requires close association with adipocytes for proper development. The role of adipocytes in mammary gland development and diseases like obesity and breast cancer deserves further investigation.

Brown Adipose Tissue: New Challenges for Prevention of Childhood Obesity. A Narrative Review

Elvira Verduci et al.

Summary: Research has been focused on the potential role of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in addressing pediatric obesity, with factors such as maternal lifestyle, type of breastfeeding, healthy microbiota, and environmental factors influencing BAT's thermogenic activity. While most evidence comes from preclinical studies, further clinical research is needed to understand early factors in BAT development and function modulation for preventing childhood obesity.

Skeletal muscle thermogenesis enables aquatic life in the smallest marine mammal

Traver Wright et al.

Summary: The basal metabolic rate in mammals generally scales with body mass, but sea otters exhibit a hypermetabolism approximately three times that of the predicted rate due to thermogenic adaptation for living in cool water. The respiratory capacity and thermogenic leak in sea otter muscle are elevated, suggesting that muscle metabolism is the source of their basal hypermetabolism, regulated by thermogenic demand.

Transcriptional Landscaping Identifies a Beige Adipocyte Depot in the Newborn Mouse

Anh Cuong Hoang et al.

Summary: The study identified gene networks in developing iWAT and BAT in mice, showing similarities and differences in gene expression related to immune responses and antiviral factors. It also revealed a metabolic shift in postnatal iWAT from thermogenesis and lipolysis towards fat storage. Additionally, differences were found in the signals for thermogenic fat differentiation between early postnatal life and adulthood.

Exosome-Derived MicroRNAs of Human Milk and Their Effects on Infant Health and Development

Bodo C. Melnik et al.

Summary: Human milk contains multiple biologically active components that support infant growth, health, and development. Milk-derived extracellular vesicles (MEVs), specifically milk exosomes (MEX) and their miRNA cargo, play key roles in intestinal maturation, barrier function, and suppression of NF-kappa B signaling. Understanding the molecular biology of milk provides insights into how infants are both breast-fed and breast-programmed.

Specialized Pro-Resolving Lipid Mediators in Neonatal Cardiovascular Physiology and Diseases

Andrea Gila-Diaz et al.

Summary: Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediators (SPMs) derived from long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) play a critical role in cardiovascular health and disease, particularly in neonates. These mediators enhance host defense by resolving inflammation and promoting tissue repair, and also possess anti-inflammatory properties.

Brown Fat-Activating Lipokine 12,13-diHOME in Human Milk Is Associated With Infant Adiposity

Danielle Wolfs et al.

Summary: The study found that 12,13-diHOME is present in human milk for the first time and its concentration is associated with infant adiposity, along with other oxidized linoleic acid metabolites. Additionally, the abundance of lipids in milk is related to thermogenesis.
