Systemic deficiency of GM1 ganglioside in Parkinson's disease tissues and its relation to the disease etiology

Summary: Based on our findings, we discovered that patients with sporadic Parkinson's disease (sPD) show a systemic deficiency of GM1 in various tissues, including the substantia nigra, occipital cortex, colon, heart, skin, fibroblasts, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Age is a contributing factor, but there are additional suppressive factors involved in the decline of GM1 and the development of sPD. Replacement of GM1 shows promise as a potential therapy for altering the course of the disease.
