Targeting Wnt/β-catenin by anthelmintic drug niclosamide overcomes paclitaxel resistance in esophageal cancer

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is a highly aggressive malignancy with high rates of recurrence. Niclosamide, an anthelmintic drug, shows potential as a sensitizing agent to overcome chemoresistance in esophageal cancer, particularly in combination with paclitaxel. Mechanistically, niclosamide inhibits Wnt/beta-catenin signaling and shows efficacy in inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis in paclitaxel-resistant esophageal cancer cells.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Demethylated miR-216a Regulates High Mobility Group Box 3 Promoting Growth of Esophageal Cancer Cells Through Wnt/β-Catenin Pathway

Cheng-Xi Sun et al.

Summary: MiR-216a is hypermethylated in the promoter region in esophageal cancer, leading to downregulation, while its downstream protein HMGB3 is upregulated. MiR-216a can affect cell proliferation, migration, invasion, apoptosis, and the activity of the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway in esophageal cancer.

EMT imparts cancer stemness and plasticity: new perspectives and therapeutic potential

Sayoni Roy et al.

Summary: Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a crucial cellular process in development, tissue repair, and cancer progression, regulated by transcription factors, cytokines, and growth factors. Recent studies highlight the significance of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in tumor promotion, invasion, and metastasis.
