Amphioxus neuroglia: Molecular characterization and evidence for early compartmentalization of the developing nerve cord

Matteo Bozzo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that amphioxus glial lineages express genes typical of vertebrate astroglia and radial glia, segregate early in development, and form a spatially separate cell proliferation zone. This provides strong evidence for the presence of vertebrate-type glial cells in amphioxus, shedding light on the role of segregated progenitor cell pools in CNS development and offering insights into precursor cell deployment in the chordate nerve cord in an evolutionary context.

Diversity and versatility of p38 kinase signalling in health and disease

Begona Canovas et al.

Summary: The ability of cells to cope with various stressful situations is crucial for survival, with p38 alpha kinase playing a key role in the cellular stress response. Understanding the diversity of p38 alpha substrates, their mechanisms, and their connections to specific cellular functions is important for insights into physiology and pathology. Dysregulation of the p38 alpha pathway has been linked to diseases such as inflammation, immune disorders, and cancer.

Vangl2 promotes the formation of long cytonemes to enable distant Wnt/β-catenin signaling

Lucy Brunt et al.

Summary: Vangl2 regulates Wnt ligand distribution by controlling cytoneme behavior, enhancing paracrine Wnt/β-catenin signaling. This study reveals the crucial role of Vangl2 in intercellular Wnt signal transduction through cytonemes.

From Cell Death to Regeneration: Rebuilding After Injury

Dylan J. Guerin et al.

Summary: Apoptosis plays a critical role in regeneration by stimulating proliferation and regulating cell number and patterning in regenerating tissues. Its conservation across species highlights its importance in programmed cell death and motivates further investigation into its mechanisms and functions during regeneration.

An Updated Staging System for Cephalochordate Development: One Table Suits Them All

Joao E. Carvalho et al.

Summary: Chordates are divided into three subphyla: Vertebrata, Tunicata, and Cephalochordata. Phylogenetically, Cephalochordata, commonly known as lancelets, are closely related to Vertebrata and Tunicata. Despite being important models for understanding the evolutionary history of chordates, there is still no universally adopted staging system and nomenclature for developing lancelets. In this study, the development of the European lancelet was characterized and a streamlined developmental staging system was proposed, which could be applicable to other lancelet species.

The morphogenetic changes that lead to cell extrusion in development and cell competition

Masazumi Tada

Summary: Cell extrusion is a morphogenetic process where unfit or dying cells are eliminated from tissues in interaction with healthy cells. It is closely associated with cell fate determination and differentiation during development. Uncontrolled cell death can lead to abnormal development, while cell competition is considered a quality control mechanism in proliferating tissues.

Robustness of epithelial sealing is an emerging property of local ERK feedback driven by cell elimination

Leo Valon et al.

Summary: Research using Drosophila pupal notum as a model shows that clusters of cell death impair epithelial sealing, but such clusters are rarely observed in vivo. Statistical analysis and simulations reveal a transient and local protective phase near each cell death, driven by transient activation of ERK in neighboring cells, preventing clustered cell elimination.
