Asthma and COVID-19: a systematic review

Natalia F. Mendes et al.

Summary: A systematic review of all reports on COVID-19 published between December 2019 and June 30, 2020 found conflicting results regarding the potential association between asthma and severe COVID-19. Only 1.6% of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 were reported to have asthma as a premorbid condition, suggesting that asthma may not be a significant contributing factor to the development of COVID-19.

Chitinase 3-like-1 protects airway function despite promoting type 2 inflammation during fungal-associated allergic airway inflammation

Joseph J. Mackel et al.

Summary: Exposure to fungi can lead to various comorbidities, with chronic exposure to Aspergillus fumigatus potentially causing severe asthma with fungal sensitization or allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. A study found that elevated levels of chitinase-like protein YKL-40 are present in lung lavage fluid from asthma patients sensitized to fungi. Mice deficient in the murine ortholog of YKL-40 showed increased airway hyperresponsiveness in an experimental model of fungal-associated allergic airway inflammation, despite having lower type 2 responses. Bone marrow chimera studies indicated that BRP-39 plays a protective role in controlling airway hyperresponsiveness during fungal asthma.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection of Airway Epithelial Cells

Gwanghui Ryu et al.

Summary: COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 is a highly contagious virus that primarily spreads through airway epithelial cells, with high viral loads in the upper respiratory tract. Host cellular receptors in these cells have been identified through single-cell RNA sequencing or immunostaining. Infected airway epithelial cells produce chemokines and cytokines to recruit inflammatory cells, while IFN signaling is crucial for host defense against the virus.
