Expression of glucose transporters in human neurodegenerative diseases

Kinga Gluchowska et al.

Summary: The central nervous system relies on glucose as its main source of energy, with different types of glucose transporters facilitating the transport of glucose into CNS cells. In neurodegenerative diseases, decreased expression of glucose transporters leads to hypometabolism of glucose, while animal studies suggest that increasing levels of these transporters could potentially be used as a targeted therapy for patients with AD, HD, and PD.

Summary: The study showed that liraglutide can improve cognitive function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, independent of its hypoglycemic effect and weight loss. Optimal intervention should target cognitive decline in the early stages of dementia.
