Early administration of lopinavir/ritonavir plus hydroxychloroquine does not alter the clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infection: A retrospective cohort study

Andrea Giacomelli et al.

Summary: A study conducted in Italy during the first wave of the epidemic found that there was no significant difference in clinical improvement rates between COVID-19 patients who started LPV/r + HCQ treatment early and those who started later. Additionally, concerns were raised about severe adverse events attributed to LPV/r, casting doubt on the benefit of using this combination to treat COVID-19.

Genomic evidence for reinfection with SARS-CoV-2: a case study

Richard L. Tillett et al.

Summary: A man was infected with SARS-CoV-2 twice with genetically different virus variants, the second infection being more severe. The study suggests that previous exposure to SARS-CoV-2 may not guarantee immunity, and all individuals should take precautions to avoid infection. This has implications for vaccine development and application.

Spike mutation D614G alters SARS-CoV-2 fitness

Jessica A. Plante et al.

Summary: The D614G substitution in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein enhances viral replication and infectivity in human lung epithelial cells, primary airway tissues, and hamsters. This variant may increase transmission in the upper respiratory tract and doesn't seem to significantly reduce vaccine efficacy. Further research on therapeutic antibodies targeting the circulating G614 virus is recommended.

The Longitudinal Immune Response to Coronavirus Disease 2019: Chasing the Cytokine Storm

Alice S. Chau et al.

Summary: The progression of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, COVID-19, to critical illness is associated with an exaggerated immune response, leading to a cytokine storm. This abnormal immune response includes delayed neutrophil recruitment, prolonged immune stimulation, and elevated levels of inflammatory markers. The dysfunctional immune response in COVID-19 also involves lymphopenia, reduced T cells, reduced natural killer cell maturation, and uncontrolled plasmablast proliferation causing aberrant IgG levels.

6-month consequences of COVID-19 in patients discharged from hospital: a cohort study (Publication with Expression of Concern. See vol. 401, pg. 90, 2023)

Chaolin Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term health consequences of discharged COVID-19 patients and associated risk factors, particularly disease severity. Patients with more severe illness during hospitalization showed more severe impaired pulmonary diffusion capacities and abnormal chest imaging manifestations, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for long-term recovery.

Longitudinal profiling of respiratory and systemic immune responses reveals myeloid cell-driven lung inflammation in severe COVID-19

Peter A. Szabo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the immune responses in the respiratory tract and blood of severe COVID-19 patients, revealing that T cells in the airways showed protective profiles while myeloid cells exhibited hyperinflammatory signatures. These findings provide important insights for understanding and treating COVID-19 lung pathology.

Acute and long-term disruption of glycometabolic control after SARS-CoV-2 infection

Summary: Patients with COVID-19 may experience hyperglycaemia, insulin resistance, and abnormal glucose metabolism, with these glycaemic abnormalities potentially persisting for at least 2 months after recovery. Further research into metabolic abnormalities in the context of long COVID is warranted.
