High strength and microwave-absorbing polymer-derived SiCN honeycomb ceramic prepared by 3D printing

Zhenxue Pan et al.

Summary: The study successfully fabricated SiCN honeycomb ceramic with excellent mechanical and microwave-absorbing properties by optimizing the ratio of multifunctional acrylates. At low temperatures, the free carbon nanodiamonds formed through the copolymerization of acrylate and polysilazane give SiCN honeycomb ceramic an extremely high microwave absorption rate.

Role of grain constraint on the martensitic transformation in ceria-doped zirconia

Edward L. Pang et al.

Summary: By conducting a comparative study on sintered pellets and powders, this research investigates the reasons behind decreased transformation temperatures and incomplete transformation in zirconia materials. The study finds that transformation temperatures are depressed in pellets due to grain constraint, while incomplete transformation in powders is attributed to insufficient driving force.

Mechanical properties of 3D printed ceramic cellular materials with triply periodic minimal surface architectures

Minhao Shen et al.

Summary: This study implemented four types of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) via digital light processing technology to create cellular ceramics and experimentally investigated their mechanical properties. Results showed that compressive strength of TPMS structures increases with relative density, with s14 structure exhibiting the highest compressive strength among the tested structures. The porosity dependence of Young's modulus of sintered zirconia TPMS suggests a better prediction using the Pabst-Gregorova exponential relation compared to the classical Gibson-Ashby model.

Grain-size effect on cracking accumulation in yttria-doped zirconia ceramics during cyclic martensitic transformations

Isabel R. Crystal et al.

Summary: Bulk polycrystalline zirconia-based ceramics often crack during martensitic transformations due to transformation mismatch stresses. Smaller grain sizes require more cycles to disaggregate due to larger grain boundary area that must crack. The energy relieved through cracking decreases with increasing grain size, suggesting the need for alternate accommodation mechanisms at larger grain sizes to relieve transformation mismatch stresses.

Mechanical properties and failure behaviour of architected alumina microlattices fabricated by stereolithography 3D printing

Xiu Yun Yap et al.

Summary: Alumina microlattices with different topologies were fabricated using stereolithography 3D printing method. The mechanical properties were highest in Simple Cubic lattices and deviated from Ashby's power law at higher relative densities due to joint deformation. Failure mechanisms were discussed using finite element simulation analysis, showing that the microlattices exhibited better specific modulus and strength than many engineering materials.

Architected cellular materials: A review on their mechanical properties towards fatigue-tolerant design and fabrication

M. Benedetti et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing is now a mature technology that is being used to produce high-performance parts, including mission-critical components. The intentional design of porous metal structures, such as cellular or lattice structures, offers advantages in terms of specific mechanical or performance characteristics. While concerns over structural integrity remain, improvements in the manufacturing processes are leading to better fatigue properties for additively manufactured cellular structures.
