Fused Filament Deposition of PLA: The Role of Interlayer Adhesion in the Mechanical Performances

Sara Liparoti et al.

Summary: A set of criteria for enhancing mechanical performances of PLA standard specimens were proposed by adjusting the temperature field during fused PLA deposition. Temperature was found to have a significant impact on the morphology and mechanical characteristics of the specimens, especially on interlayer adhesion and molecular diffusion. A mathematical model was introduced to simulate temperature evolution, which proved consistent with experimental results, showing a relationship with mechanical performances, morphology, and molecular weight between entanglements of the parts.

Finite element analysis in fused deposition modeling research: A literature review

Sumit Paul

Summary: Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is a popular rapid prototyping technique where Finite Element (FE) methods are commonly used for initial analysis. However, the existing literature lacks realistic FE models for surface finish and geometrical analysis, highlighting the need for researchers to focus more on FE analysis for FDM fabricated parts.

The Extent of Interlayer Bond Strength during Fused Filament Fabrication of Nylon Copolymers: An Interplay between Thermal History and Crystalline Morphology

Dries Vaes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between crystallinity, interlayer bonding strength, and crystalline morphology during Fused Filament Fabrication. Increasing liquefier temperature and reducing feedstock molecular weight improve interlayer bond strength, while higher build plate temperature leads to larger spherulites and increased crystallinity but negatively impacts interlayer bond strength.

High-cycle bending fatigue properties of additive-manufactured ABS and PLA polymers fabricated by fused deposition modeling 3D-printing

M. Azadi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of print direction on the high-cycle bending fatigue properties of polymer parts made by FDM 3D printing. Results showed that PLA specimens printed horizontally had better fatigue lifetimes than ABS samples. Factors such as print direction, material, and stress level were found to be statistically significant in influencing fatigue strength.

Importance of Polymer Rheology on Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing: Correlating Process Physics to Print Properties

Arit Das et al.

Summary: Material extrusion (MatEx) is an additive manufacturing technique for fabricating three-dimensional objects based on CAD files, and understanding the rheological properties of polymeric feedstocks is crucial. The rheological characteristics of polymers during MatEx process govern interlayer welding and mechanical performance of printed parts.
