Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool to characterize ceria-based catalysts

Stephane Loridant

Summary: This paper reviews the various opportunities offered by Raman spectroscopy for advanced characterization of ceria-based catalysts, including spectral modifications induced by nanocrystallinity, defects, doping, reduction, identification of supported molecular species, isolated atoms, nanoclusters, surface modes, hydroxyl groups, and reaction intermediates. In situ/operando studies for environmental catalysis are also summarized, highlighting Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool for characterizing ceria-based catalysts.

Gd-Bi-M-Ce-O (M = Cu, Zr, Ni, Co, Mn) ceria-based solid solutions for low temperature CO oxidation

Igor Zagaynov et al.

Summary: The Ceria-based solid solutions doped with Gd, Bi, and a third dopant were successfully synthesized using the co-precipitation method with ultrasonic treatment. The synthesized powders exhibited a cubic fluorite structure with an average particle size of 5-15 nm and a mesoporous structure with pore diameters of 2-5 nm. Among the solid solutions studied, the catalyst Gd0.05Bi0.15Mn0.20Ce0.60O2 showed the lowest oxidation temperature, indicating superior catalytic activity.

Sm(Nd) doped ceria materials for multifunctional application

Igor V. Zagaynov et al.

Summary: Ceria based solid solution doped with copper, manganese, and rare earth elements were synthesized and shown to have enhanced surface area and oxygen mobility. The catalytic activity in CO oxidation was higher in samples containing neodymium compared to samarium. These materials also showed potential as solid electrolytes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Summary: A series of ceria-based solid solutions were prepared by a simple coprecipitation method, and Cu0.08Mn0.02Nd0.1Ce0.8O2 catalyst showed the highest oxidative activity. Dopant ions have both positive and negative effects on the catalytic activity of materials.
