Digitalization and energy: How does internet development affect China's energy consumption?

Siyu Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of internet development on China's energy consumption and finds a significant positive correlation between internet development and energy consumption in China. Additionally, internet development has a significant negative impact on the energy consumption structure and intensity in China, suggesting that internet development can help accelerate the decline in energy consumption intensity.

What drives energy intensity fall in China? Evidence from a meta-frontier approach

Boqiang Lin et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel meta-frontier multi-tier approach to analyze the impacts of industrial structure reorganization, regional equilibrium development, and management efficiency on energy intensity change, using China's energy intensity as a case study. The results showed a significant decline in China's energy intensity during 2000-2016, primarily driven by potential energy intensity change and technological progress. Additionally, six factors, including industrial technological gaps and regional technological gaps, were found to have important impacts on energy intensity. Local governments should tailor policies based on the characteristics of different factors at multiple spatial scales.

Positive or negative externalities? Exploring the spatial spillover and industrial agglomeration threshold effects of environmental regulation on haze pollution in China

Yihang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatial spillover effect and industrial agglomeration threshold effect of environmental regulations on haze pollution in China using data from 277 cities. The results show that there are regional heterogeneity regarding spillover effect and threshold effect, and suggest policy recommendations based on industrial agglomeration levels.

Does industrial structure distortion impact the energy intensity in China?

Xiaobo Shen et al.

Summary: Changes in industrial structure can impact energy intensity, with China experiencing structural distortions that affect resource allocation efficiency. Research shows a correlation between decreasing industrial structure distortion index and declining energy intensity, while foreign direct investment has a negative impact on energy intensity.

Improving energy use and mitigating pollutant emissions across Three Regions and Ten Urban Agglomerations: A city-level productivity growth decomposition

Zhuang Miao et al.

Summary: This paper uses Data Envelopment Analysis to measure technical inefficiency and productivity change in China's Three Regions and Ten Urban Agglomerations, finding that industrial energy consumption, industrial sulfur dioxide, and industrial soot & dust emissions are the main variables causing industrial inefficiency across regions. Spatially, there are differences in environmental performance and productivity change patterns among different urban agglomerations.

Economic Policy Uncertainty, Outward Foreign Direct Investments, and Green Total Factor Productivity: Evidence from Firm-Level Data in China

Yuegang Song et al.

Summary: This study found a significant positive impact of Chinese firms' outward foreign direct investment on green total factor productivity, while economic policy uncertainties decrease green total factor productivity. Technology-seeking OFDI contributes more to green total factor productivity, and these results are robust across different regions and econometric techniques.

Dynamic evolution and influencing factors of industrial green total factor energy efficiency in China

Quanyi Wang et al.

Summary: This paper establishes an evaluation index system for industrial green total factor energy efficiency with undesired outputs, and evaluates the IGTFEEs of 30 provincial administrative regions in China from 2003 to 2017 using the DDF model. Results show significant variations in IGTFEE among the provinces, with a declining trend overall. Technological progress, opening-up policies, and environmental regulations were found to significantly promote IGTFEE, while energy structure acted as a major constraint.

Total factor energy efficiency in Chinese manufacturing industry under industry and regional heterogeneities

Ya Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the energy efficiency of Chinese manufacturing industry is generally low and is mainly affected by management inefficiency. Dual heterogeneity deeply affects the technology gap rate, with industry heterogeneity causing a larger impact. Enterprise scale, foreign direct investment, economy development level, and industrial structure have a positive impact on energy efficiency.

Transformation effect of resource-based cities based on PSM-DID model: An empirical analysis from China

Fei Fan et al.

Summary: The implementation of the National Plan for Resource-based City Sustainable Development has promoted economic, social, and ecological transformation, but did not have additional effects on sustainable resource utilization. Market development is the driving factor that affects all forms of transformation the most, and the impact of this transformation varies by stages of urban development according to the full life cycle of the resource-based city and its local resources.

Does internet development improve green total factor energy efficiency? Evidence from China

Haitao Wu et al.

Summary: The study shows that internet development can directly improve local GTFEE and enhance GTFEE in neighboring regions. It can also indirectly improve regional GTFEE by reducing resource mismatch, enhancing innovation capabilities, and promoting industrial structure upgrades. Furthermore, the impact of internet development on GTFEE is influenced by a nonlinear relationship, with the effect gradually increasing with improved regional innovation capabilities and industrial structure.

Domestic trade and energy productivity in China: An inverted U-shaped relationship

Gang Jin et al.

Summary: Boosting domestic trade and increasing energy productivity are main objectives in China's new normal economic development. The study finds an inverted U-shaped effect of domestic trade on the growth of energy total factor productivity (TFP), supporting the strategy proposed by the Chinese government to build a new development pattern with a large domestic cycle as its mainstay and in which a dual domestic and international cycle would be mutually promoting.
