Crop traits enabling yield gains under more frequent extreme climatic events

Haoliang Yan et al.

Summary: Climate change in central China will impact agricultural production through extreme climatic events, but breeding climate-resilient wheat genotypes can help mitigate these effects. By optimizing crop traits and management practices, higher yields and adaptation to future climates can be achieved.

Summary: The study assessed the impacts of climate change on wheat yield stability, with findings indicating that changes in climate mean were the main driver for yield changes, followed by the interactive changes in climate mean and variability impacting yield variability.

Temperature dataset of CMIP6 models over China: evaluation, trend and uncertainty

Qinglong You et al.

Summary: This study investigates the projected surface mean temperature changes over China and its four sub-regions using data from 20 models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). It shows that China is expected to experience increasing temperatures, with accelerated warming in Northwestern China and the Tibetan Plateau. The main sources of uncertainty for future temperature projections in China are identified as model and scenario uncertainty, particularly in regions with the largest cold bias.

A multi-model analysis of long-term emissions and warming implications of current mitigation efforts

Ida Sognnaes et al.

Summary: Using seven integrated assessment models, this study projects global energy CO2 emissions trajectories based on near-term mitigation efforts and assumptions on post-2030 efforts. Although a wide range of emissions scenarios is found for 2050, most of them result in median warming of less than 3 degrees C by 2100. However, even the most optimistic scenario is insufficient to limit global warming to 2 degrees C. The study also highlights the importance of diverse model intercomparisons and the exaggeration of carbon capture and storage use in representing policy with economy-wide carbon prices.

Detrimental effects of heat stress on grain weight and quality in rice (Oryza sativa L.) are aggravated by decreased relative humidity

Haoliang Yan et al.

Summary: This study conducted experiments on six rice cultivars in controlled growth chambers, revealing that RH75% combined with different temperature treatments significantly reduced grain weight, head rice rate, and chalkiness. The most heat-tolerant cultivar, R168, still showed differences in grain weight, head rice rate, and chalkiness between the two RH levels.

Climate change shifts forward flowering and reduces crop waterlogging stress

Ke Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that climate change will reduce waterlogging stress and advance the optimal flowering period. However, substantial yield reduction may still occur due to increased high temperature stress. It is recommended to plant waterlogging tolerant genotypes and sow earlier to mitigate yield losses.

Carbon myopia: The urgent need for integrated social, economic and environmental action in the livestock sector

Matthew Tom Harrison et al.

Summary: Despite the fact that most greenhouse gas emissions from ruminant livestock occur in low- and middle-income countries, the majority of mitigation strategies are still designed for developed countries, which poses a serious concern. Few studies concurrently assess the social, economic, and environmental impacts of mitigation measures, with only a small number of strategies having potential triple-bottom line benefits.
