Ascorbic Acid Enhances Growth and Yield of Sweet Peppers (Capsicum annum) by Mitigating Salinity Stress

Hossam S. El-Beltagi et al.

Summary: Salinity is a major global issue affecting crop productivity. This study found that foliar application of ascorbic acid can mitigate the negative effects of salt stress on sweet peppers. A concentration of 1.20 mM of ascorbic acid can improve growth, productivity, and enzymatic activity of sweet peppers under salt conditions up to 70 mM of sodium chloride (NaCl).

Control of Gas Emissions (N2O and CO2) Associated with Applied Different Rates of Nitrogen and Their Influences on Growth, Productivity, and Physio-Biochemical Attributes of Green Bean Plants Grown under Different Irrigation Methods

Hossam S. El-Beltagi et al.

Summary: The use of nitrogenous fertilizers in agriculture can lead to uncontrolled gas emissions, causing global warming and climate change. This study evaluated greenhouse gas emissions associated with different rates of nitrogen fertilization and irrigation systems in green beans. The results showed a positive correlation between greenhouse gas emissions and the rate of nitrogen fertilization. The subsurface and drip irrigation systems achieved the highest values in terms of growth and pod yield attributes. N supplements at 90% and/or 100% of the recommended dose under the subsurface irrigation system resulted in the highest concentrations of chlorophyll, vitamin C, total protein, and antioxidant enzymes. Proline and pod fibers decreased with increasing nitrogen rate, while water use efficiency improved up to 100% or 110% of the recommended dose.
