Cell wall-derived mixed-linked β-1,3/1,4-glucans trigger immune responses and disease resistance in plants

Diego Rebaque et al.

Summary: The study found that MLGs are a group of carbohydrate-based molecular patterns perceived by plants, with MLG43 being the smallest structure capable of triggering strong pattern-triggered immunity responses and disease resistance. The mechanism of MLG43 recognition differs from that of other carbohydrate MAMPs, providing potential insights into plant immunity mechanisms.

Development of Vernonia amygdalina Leaf Extract Emulsion Formulations in Controlling Gray Mold Disease on Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)

Siti Fairuz Yusoff et al.

Summary: A botanical fungicide derived from Vernonia amygdalina leaf extract was developed to control gray mold on tomatoes. By optimizing the emulsion formulation, two formulations (F5 and F7) were identified to be stable in storage, exhibit remarkable thermodynamic stability, smaller particle size, highly stable in zeta potential, low in polydispersity index, viscosity, and surface tension. In situ antifungal activity on tomato fruits demonstrated that F5 formulation had strong fungicidal activity against Botrytis cinerea with zero disease incidence and severity, while F7 formulation reduced disease incidence by 62.5% compared to a positive control.

Foliar Spray Application of Chlorella vulgaris Extract: Effect on the Growth of Lettuce Seedlings

Emanuele La Bella et al.

Summary: The study investigated the application of Chlorella vulgaris extract on lettuce seedlings, which positively influenced the growth of seedlings, increased chlorophylls, carotenoids, protein content, and ashes in shoots. Additionally, the extract also had a positive impact on the nitrogen metabolism in shoots and increased dry matter, proteins, and ash content in roots.

Foliar Application of Ulva rigida Water Extracts Improves Salinity Tolerance in Wheat (Triticum durum L.)

Salma Latique et al.

Summary: The study revealed that seaweed extract significantly enhanced the tolerance of wheat plants to salt stress, promoting plant growth and increasing photosynthetic pigment contents, along with improving antioxidant enzyme activities. Particularly, plants treated with 12.5% seaweed extract showed better resistance to salt stress.

Perception and First Defense Responses Against Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola in Phaseolus vulgaris: Identification of Wall-Associated Kinase Receptors

Alfonso Gonzalo De la Rubia et al.

Summary: Infection of common bean with Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola led to increased expression of PvWAK1 at early stages, but the antioxidant response was not efficient, resulting in cellular damage. This recognition of the pathogen only resulted in modest and slow activation of host defenses, leading to high susceptibility to P. syringae pv. phaseolicola.

Effectiveness of Foliar Biofortification of Carrot With Iodine and Selenium in a Field Condition

Roksana Rakoczy-Lelek et al.

Summary: Iodine and selenium are essential for human and animal growth, with a worldwide deficit in diets. Enriching plants with these elements through foliar spraying was safe and effective in biofortifying carrots, without negative impacts on yield or quality. The metabolic pathways of iodine applied through foliar spray were well understood, with iodides being the dominant form in plant tissues. No synergistic or antagonistic interactions between iodine and selenium were observed in the roots after foliar application.

Immune Priming Triggers Cell Wall Remodeling and Increased Resistance to Halo Blight Disease in Common Bean

Alfonso Gonzalo De la Rubia et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the cell wall of beans is altered to some extent by the bacterial pathogen Pph, particularly affecting the pectic component, but still vulnerable to enzymatic hydrolysis. However, treatment with 2,6-dichloroisonicotinic acid (INA) triggered a significant remodeling of the cell wall, making it more resistant to enzymatic hydrolysis.

Raw and Fermented Alfalfa Brown Juice Induces Changes in the Germination and Development of French Marigold (Tagetes patula L.) Plants

Dome Barna et al.

Summary: Applying 0.5% fermented alfalfa brown juice significantly improved seed germination and had positive effects on the growth, physiology, and anatomical properties of Tagetes patula L. 'Csemo' plants, making it a better choice than non-fermented juice. This demonstrates that fermented alfalfa brown juice can be a valuable biostimulant for sustainable horticultural practices.
