Ameliorative Impact of an Extract of the HalophyteArthrocnemum macrostachyumon Growth and Biochemical Parameters of Soybean Under Salinity Stress

Mahmoud S. Osman et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that foliar application of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum extract can improve the growth of soybean plants under salinity stress, enhancing photosynthetic pigments, soluble sugars, and soluble proteins content while reducing oxidative damage. Additionally, the extract increased the levels of proline, total free amino acids, total phenols, and ascorbic acid. Protein expression was suppressed in soybean plants irrigated with 150 mM NaCl, and this suppression was exacerbated by using A. macrostachyum extract.

Influence of salinity stress on PSII in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes, probed by chlorophyll-a fluorescence

Muhammad Salim Akhter et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in the efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) in barley genotypes with different salt tolerances, revealing that salt stress caused photoinhibition of PSII. Some JIP-test parameters can be potential phenotype markers for screening salt-tolerant genotypes.

Exogenous application of melatonin alleviates salt stress-induced decline in growth and photosynthesis in Glycine max (L.) seedlings by improving mineral uptake, antioxidant and glyoxalase system

Basmah M. Alharbi et al.

Summary: Foliar spraying of melatonin can alleviate salt stress damage in soybean plants by improving pigment synthesis and PSII activity, regulating antioxidant systems, reducing ROS accumulation, and protecting membrane functioning.

Field Screening of Wheat Advanced Lines for Salinity Tolerance

Ehab S. A. Moustafa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic variability of new breeding lines under salinity stress and found significant genetic variability for all evaluated agronomic traits across generations in the salt-stressed field. The elite F8 breeding lines displayed higher performance than the adopted check cultivars and were classified into four groups based on yield index, ranging from highly salt-tolerant to slightly salt-tolerant genotypes, enhancing the narrow genetic pool of salt-tolerance. The detected response to selection and high to intermediate broad-sense heritability for measured traits suggest the potential for identifying salt-tolerant breeding lines through advanced generations under salinity stress.

Melatonin Improves Cotton Salt Tolerance by Regulating ROS Scavenging System and Ca2+ Signal Transduction

Yuexin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that melatonin application can improve salt tolerance in cotton seedlings, with different levels of endogenous melatonin content in cotton varieties with varying salt tolerance. Inhibition of melatonin biosynthesis genes and endogenous melatonin content in cotton resulted in decreased antioxidant enzyme activity, Ca2+ content, and salt tolerance.

Salt stress reduces root water uptake in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) through modification of the transcellular transport path

Thorsten Knipfer et al.

Summary: Salt stress reduces the hydraulic conductivity (Lp) of the root system by decreasing water flow along the transcellular path, which involves changes in the activity and gene expression level of aquaporins. Modeling of root-Lp shows that the reduction in root-Lp does not require additional hydraulic resistances through apoplastic barriers at the endodermis. Data points to a near-perfect semi-permeability of roots of control plants (solute reflection coefficient sigma similar to 1.0), while roots of salt-stressed plants are almost as semi-permeable (sigma > 0.8).
