Litter manipulation effects on microbial communities and enzymatic activities vary with soil depth in a subtropical Chinese fir plantation

Ren Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that adding litter to the soil generally has positive effects, while removing litter may have different effects on soil properties, especially on soil nutrients, microbial communities, and enzymatic activities. In addition, enzymatic stoichiometry is more influenced by soil depth, and soil microbial communities and enzymatic activities exhibit asynchronous responses with increasing profile depth.

Extracellular enzyme activity and stoichiometry: The effect of soil microbial element limitation during leaf litter decomposition

Xuejuan Bai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the temporal variability of soil microbial biomass and associated soil enzyme activities during leaf litter decomposition, highlighting how soil microorganisms maintain element homeostasis of C, N, and P by producing soil enzymes. Results showed that soil enzyme activities were highest in summer, while soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen peaked in winter. Significant effects of soil water content and temperature on soil enzyme activities and stoichiometry were observed, with changes in the stoichiometry of extracellular enzyme activities between different stages of litter decomposition. Strong positive correlations between microbial element limitation indicators and soil enzyme activities suggest that microorganisms allocate resources towards enzyme production to mine for scarce nutrients, contributing to element homeostasis maintenance.

The role of plants and soil properties in the enzyme activities of substrates on hard coal mine spoil heaps

Agnieszka Kompala-Baba et al.

Summary: Studies on enzyme activities and functional diversity on hard coal spoil heaps have shown that grass-dominated vegetation patches have a greater impact on soil enzyme activity and functional diversity compared to forb-dominated patches. Grasses, with their extensive root systems, effectively increase enzyme activity and health of the substrate, making them recommended for reclamation purposes.

Surface loading of nanoparticles on engineered or natural erythrocytes for prolonged circulation time: strategies and applications

Si-qi Zhang et al.

Summary: Nano drug-delivery systems can enhance drug efficiency and reduce toxicity, and prolonging the circulation time of nanoparticles by loading them onto erythrocytes shows great potential. However, the key lies in properly attaching nanoparticles to erythrocytes for optimal results in drug delivery systems.

Litter decomposition affected by bamboo expansion is modulated by litter-mixing and microbial composition

Junwei Luan et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that litter decomposition affected by bamboo expansion is jointly modulated by litter-mixing and microbial composition, shedding new insights on predicting changes in soil C and nutrient cycling induced by shifts in plant community composition.

Linkages of litter and soil C:N:P stoichiometry with soil microbial resource limitation and community structure in a subtropical broadleaf forest invaded by Moso bamboo

Yingzhi Zhao et al.

Summary: The invasion of bamboo significantly alters soil microbial community structure and enzyme activities, leading to imbalances in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus ratios between decomposers and their resources. This study highlights the importance of understanding the stoichiometric relationship in regulating soil microbial dynamics following plant invasion.
