Resistance of the fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda, to transgenicBacillus thuringiensisCry1F corn in the Americas: lessons and implications for Bt corn IRM in China

Fangneng Huang

Summary: The fall armyworm, a major pest of Bt crops in North and South America, has recently invaded Africa and Asia, including China, posing a threat to food security. The resistance of S. frugiperda to Cry1F corn has been widely observed in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, and the United States due to various factors such as limited modes of action and cross-resistance among Bt proteins. Strategies for integrated resistance management in China include using high dose traits, monitoring resistance, employing gene pyramiding, and avoiding planting Bt corn in areas where armyworms overwinter. Lessons from global Bt crop use can be valuable for improving resistance management programs in the Americas and promoting sustainable Bt corn technology in China.

Commercial Release of Genetically Modified Crops in Africa: Interface Between Biosafety Regulatory Systems and Varietal Release Systems

Olalekan Akinbo et al.

Summary: African countries are facing key challenges in the deployment of GM crops, needing close collaboration between biosafety competent authorities and variety release authorities to ensure the effective and efficient commercial release while ensuring food and environmental safety. The evaluation and approval process of lead events are crucial in the commercial release of GM crops, and the introduction of new biotechnology products involves comprehensive testing in different environments before regulatory approvals.

Facing Bt toxins growing up: Developmental changes of susceptibility to Bt corn hybrids in fall armyworm populations and the implications for resistance management

Clebson S. Tavares et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of developmental changes in target-pest susceptibility to Bt toxins for resistance management in Bt crops. Results show that Cry1F resistance reduces susceptibility to Cry1A.105 + Cry2Ab toxins, while Vip3Aa has the potential to control Bt-toxin-resistant fall armyworm populations.
