Understanding antibiotic use for pig farming in Thailand: a qualitative study

Angkana Lekagul et al.

Summary: The study reveals various factors contributing to antibiotic misuse or overuse in pig farming in Thailand, such as misconceptions about antibiotics, lack of resources for antibiotic-free farms, insufficient training for veterinarians, profit motives of pharmaceutical companies, and inadequate regulatory oversight. Improving access to veterinary services, providing reliable information on animal health and antibiotics, investing in biosecurity measures, and enhancing professional training and guidelines could help address the issue of antibiotic use in pig production in Thailand.

Exploring Farmers' Reasons for Antibiotic Use and Misuse in Pig Farms in Brazil

Rita Albernaz-Goncalves et al.

Summary: The study found that pig farmers have incorrect practices and attitudes towards antibiotic use and resistance issues, mainly due to economic, sanitary, and inspection limitations, making them unwilling to change these practices. Education, training, and behavior change nudging are needed to address this issue, and it is also necessary to involve more stakeholders beyond farmers.

Antibiotic residues in cattle and sheep meat and human exposure assessment in southern Xinjiang, China

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that antibiotic residues in animal-derived foods, especially meat, had a negligible impact on human health and were within an acceptable level of food safety risk. However, the emerging issues of antibiotic residues and bacterial resistance should not be ignored, calling for effective strategies and awareness campaigns to ensure the judicious use of antibiotics and safeguard public health.

Antimicrobial Use and Resistance in Agriculture and Food Production Systems in Africa: A Systematic Review

Stephen E. Mshana et al.

Summary: There is a lack of information on antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance in agriculture and food production systems in Africa, but data shows that cattle and poultry production are the largest consumers of antimicrobials in the region. Some countries have developed policies to address this issue, but face challenges in enforcement.

Variations in the Consumption of Antimicrobial Medicines in the European Region, 2014-2018: Findings and Implications from ESAC-Net and WHO Europe

Jane Robertson et al.

Summary: Surveillance of antimicrobial consumption is vital for addressing inappropriate use. A comparative analysis of AMC data from EU/EEA countries, Eastern European and Central Asian countries, and WHO Europe AMC Network countries revealed variations in antimicrobial consumption patterns and potential for improved prescribing practices, particularly in the selection of antimicrobial agents. Countries within the ESAC-Net network showed significant reductions in consumption over time, indicating the effectiveness of interventions to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Perspectives on the antibiotic contamination, resistance, metabolomics, and systemic remediation

Kushneet Kaur Sodhi et al.

Summary: Antibiotics, considered as emerging contaminants due to their extensive use and persistence in the environment, pose a severe impact on the environment and lead to antibiotic resistance; various mass-spectrometry-based techniques confirm their presence in the environment, released through wastewater streams and runoff from land application; a better understanding of the correlation between antibiotic use and resistance occurrence can help in developing policies to promote judicious use of antibiotics.
