Epidemiology and Genomic Analysis of Equine Encephalosis Virus Detected in Horses with Clinical Signs in South Africa, 2010-2017

Jumari Snyman et al.

Summary: EEV, a neglected virus in South Africa, generally results in mild disease in equines. However, between 2010 and 2017, 7.3% of horse samples were tested positive for EEV, with common clinical signs including fever, jaundice and dyspnea. Neurological signs were inversely associated with EEV infection, despite a high percentage of animals presenting with neurological abnormalities. Additionally, 17 EEV positive horses had coinfections with other viruses.

An Investigation of Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) as Potential Vectors of Medically and Veterinary Important Arboviruses in South Africa

Jumari Snyman et al.

Summary: This study identified both veterinary and zoonotic arboviruses in pools of Culicoides biting midges in South Africa, indicating Culicoides as potential vectors for disease outbreaks in both animals and humans. The findings suggest that Culicoides may contribute to the spread of these viruses to new regions.
