Consequences of hybridization on life history and growth in postmetamorphic Triturus macedonicus

Marko Bugarcic et al.

Summary: This study compared the life history and growth parameters of the Macedonian crested newt and the hybrids of Macedonian crested newt and Balkan crested newt. The results showed that hybridization with the Balkan crested newt does not affect the postmetamorphic growth and survival of the Macedonian crested newt.

The effect of short-term fasting on the oxidative status of larvae of crested newt species and their hybrids

Marko D. Prokic et al.

Summary: Short-term fasting leads to oxidative stress in amphibian larvae, affecting their growth and body condition, with hybrids being more susceptible to oxidative damage and less capable of dealing with the stress, lowering their chances of survival in a changing environment.

A genomic footprint of a moving hybrid zone in marbled newts

Jan W. Arntzen et al.

Summary: By using a panel of 44 nuclear genetic markers, we investigated interspecific gene flow between two hybridizing species of marbled newts in the Iberian Peninsula. Our findings suggest that T. marmoratus has been superseded by T. pygmaeus through hybridization. The hybrid zone between the two species has moved approximately 215 km along the Atlantic coast.

Genetic and morphological data demonstrate hybridization and backcrossing in a pair of salamanders at the far end of the speciation continuum

Jan W. Arntzen et al.

Summary: The study of deeply diverged yet hybridizing salamander species revealed a skewed sex ratio in the hybrid generation, with gene flow predominantly towards one species and detrimental effects of introgressive hybridization. Factors such as Bateson-Dobzhansky-Muller incompatibilities, ecological segregation, cytonuclear incompatibilities all contribute to maintaining species integrity despite incomplete isolation during secondary contact.

Tracing species replacement in Iberian marbled newts

Julia Lopez-Delgado et al.

Summary: Secondary contact between closely related species can lead to the formation of hybrid zones, allowing for interspecific gene flow. In the case of marbled newts in the Iberian Peninsula, while no additional populations of T. marmoratus were found in the Lisbon peninsula, the analysis did not definitively show whether the variation within local T. pygmaeus represents introgression from T. marmoratus.

Maternal reproductive output and F1 hybrid fitness may influence contact zone dynamics

Caroline M. Dong et al.

Summary: The study on two lizard species found that both parental reproductive traits and offspring fitness traits play a role in determining offspring performance in the contact zone. Additionally, maternal reproductive strategy differs between species, regardless of the species of their mate.
