Transport and and recovery of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) sedated with AQUI-S® and etomidate: Effects on intermediary metabolism and osmoregulation

I Jerez-Cepa et al.

Summary: The improvement of the aquaculture industry is directly linked to fish welfare, and the use of anesthetics can reduce stress responses in fish. This study evaluated the effects of AQUI-S(R) and etomidate on physiological stress responses in transported seabream juveniles, finding that AQUI-S(R) is more effective for deep anesthesia while etomidate is better at minimizing stress responses during transport.

Regulation of the early expression of MAFbx/atrogin-1 and MuRF1 through membrane-initiated cortisol action in the skeletal muscle of rainbow trout

Daniela Aravena-Canales et al.

Summary: This study revealed that cortisol plays a complex regulatory role in the expression of atrogenes in rainbow trout skeletal muscle, with both early downregulation and later upregulation observed. Membrane-initiated cortisol action was found to regulate murf1 gene expression in rainbow trout myotubes, while having no significant effect on atrogin-1.

Effects of long-term cortisol treatment on growth and osmoregulation of Atlantic salmon and brook trout

L. Vargas-Chacoff et al.

Summary: The effects of cortisol on growth and gill NKA activity vary between species, with brook trout showing greater sensitivity to cortisol compared to Atlantic salmon. In Atlantic salmon, cortisol treatment led to decreased plasma levels of insulin-like growth factor I and increased plasma growth hormone levels. This suggests that there are species differences in sensitivity to cortisol, even within the same family.
