Chemical Ecology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology of Insect Hydrocarbons

Gary J. Blomquist et al.

Summary: Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have evolved to serve both waterproofing and signaling functions, playing critical roles in chemical communication and life histories. The profiles of CHCs are influenced by diet and environment, and recent advances in understanding hydrocarbon biosynthesis have utilized molecular biology tools such as genomics and RNA interference.

Cuticular hydrocarbons on old museum specimens of the spiny mason wasp, Odynerus spinipes (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Eumeninae), shed light on the distribution and on regional frequencies of distinct chemotypes

Victoria C. Moris et al.

Summary: The mason wasp Odynerus spinipes exhibits an exceptional case of intrasexual cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profile dimorphism, with two distinct chemotypes differing in quality and quantity. The frequency of these chemotypes varies considerably across different geographic regions, possibly due to differential selection regimes and colonization routes. The study provides essential information for future research on the evolutionary and geographic origin, as well as genetics, of the CHC profile dimorphism in O. spinipes females.

Cuticular Hydrocarbon Profile Analyses Help Clarify the Species Identity of Dry-Mounted Cuckoo Wasps (Hymenoptera: Chrysididae), Including Type Material, and Reveal Evidence for a Cryptic Species

Villu Soon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the value of analyzing cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in identifying cuckoo wasps with distinct COI haplotypes, leading to the discovery of a new taxon Chrysis parabrevitarsis n. sp. Using CHC profiles in insects for taxonomic purposes is advantageous due to the rapid evolution of CHCs and the encoding of CHC biosynthesis proteins by nuclear genes. The research underlines the significance of CHC analyses in supporting taxonomic inferences based on COI barcodes, and highlights the potential of using dry-mounted collection specimens for chemical analyses and inferring the identity of museum specimens in a noninvasive manner.
