Review and Further Validation of a Practical Single-Particle Breakage Model

Luis Marcelo Tavares

Summary: This article introduces a particle breakage model suitable for describing the breakage of brittle materials and analyzes its application in the discrete element method. The model can account for the variability and size-dependency of fracture energy of particles, as well as the energy and size-dependent fragment size distributions when particles are stressed beyond a certain value.

Geomechanical Modelling of Railroad Ballast: A Review

Yahia Alabbasi et al.

Summary: Traditional ballasted tracks are widely used with ballast as the main material, contributing significantly to track alignment, stability, and sustainability. Understanding the mechanical behavior of railroad ballast is essential for better design and efficient maintenance. Two main approaches, large scale experimental and modeling, are used to understand ballast behavior.

A stochastic particle replacement strategy for simulating breakage in DEM

Luis Marcelo Tavares et al.

Summary: The discrete element method (DEM) embedded in particle breakage simulations has the potential to accurately describe desired or undesired breakage processes. Despite its advantages in computation efficiency, such as the ability to generate various particle replacement schemes, one major drawback is the jagged and unnatural size distributions produced.
