Zero waste management of spent mushroom compost

N. A. Umor et al.

Summary: Edible mushrooms are commercially grown using lignocellulosic waste through a biological process. After harvesting season, about 70% of the substrate remains as spent mushroom compost (SMC). SMC can be utilized for value-added products, supporting a zero waste approach. The major uses of SMC include in agriculture, as mushroom media, animal feed, plant compost, and fertilizer, with potential for extended usage in second cultivation and renewable energy production.

Effects of Biochar on Soil Aggregation and Distribution of Organic Carbon Fractions in Aggregates

Ming-Hsi Lee et al.

Summary: The study on the effects of rice husk biochar and cattle manure compost on a sandy loam rural soil in southern Taiwan showed that both amendments promoted soil aggregation and enriched soil organic carbon. The addition of compost further enhanced organic carbon enrichment in microaggregates and mesoaggregates, suggesting their potential role in enhancing carbon sequestration.

Possibilities of Using Organic Waste after Biological and Physical Processing-An Overview

Wieslaw Szulc et al.

Summary: Managing waste is crucial, and utilizing processes such as combustion and biological processing can significantly reduce waste accumulation. The end products remaining after processing waste are often functional for agricultural use, such as producing various fertilizers.

Effect of Organic Amendment Addition on Soil Properties, Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Grape Yield in Semi-Arid Vineyard Agroecosystems

Antonio Marin-Martinez et al.

Summary: In semi-arid vineyard agroecosystems, organic amendments such as compost and manure can improve soil fertility and grape yield, with increased CO2 emissions but decreased N2O emissions seen in plots with higher grape production. The optimal vineyard management for soil properties, yield, and GHG mitigation was found to be the use of compost in a drip-irrigated trellising vineyard with the grape variety Monastrell.

Effects of Repeated Application of Organic Soil Amendments on Horticultural Soil Physicochemical Properties, Nitrogen Budget and Yield

Sarah Duddigan et al.

Summary: The application of various organic amendments in horticulture can result in significant differences in soil characteristics and crop yields. For instance, garden waste compost can greatly increase yield, while composted bark or peat may not have a significant impact on yield. Pressure is increasing to remove peat from products available to domestic gardeners.
