Soil salinity prediction based on scale-dependent relationships with environmental variables by discrete wavelet transform in the Tarim Basin

Yang Wei et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the scale-dependent variability in soil salinity distribution under environmental controlling factors using discrete wavelet transform techniques. The results showed that the prediction accuracy significantly improved when considering multiple scale-specific relationships of environmental variables. Specific environmental factors like GDVI, evapotranspiration, and TRI were identified as major predictors of soil salinity in different land types within the oasis region.

Soil salinization management for sustainable development: A review

Ajay Singh

Summary: Expanding irrigated agriculture is essential to feed the growing global population, but it can lead to soil salinization without proper management, which is a persistent environmental issue. Over 20% of global irrigated areas currently face soil salinization and waterlogging, with potential expansion to over 50% by 2050. Proper management of soil salinization is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and comprehensive measures are needed to address this environmental problem.

Simulation of Underground Freshwater Exploitation and Analysis of Environmental Impact in Hangzhou Bay New Area, China

Zhiqiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The study utilized numerical simulation to assess the impact of emergency groundwater extraction in Hangzhou Bay New Area. The results showed that under different emergency grades, there were significant changes in water level, groundwater recovery capacity, salinity, and saltwater intrusion width. The simulation provides valuable insights for the rational allocation, development, and utilization of groundwater resources in the area.

Assessment of groundwater recharge along the Guarani aquifer system outcrop zone in SAo Paulo State (Brazil): an important tool towards integrated management

Lucas Vituri Santarosa et al.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the spatial and temporal variations of groundwater recharge in the outcrop zones of the Guarani Aquifer System in Brazil, using the Spatial Recharge method and comparing it with two traditional methods. The three methods showed similar estimates for groundwater recharge, around 17% of total rainfall, with the SR method providing robust estimation capabilities for areas lacking hydrological monitoring programs. The SR method offers valuable information for water management policymakers to mitigate impacts of climate variations and land use on recharge processes.

Spatio-Temporal Assessment of Groundwater Potential Zone in the Drought-Prone Area of Bangladesh Using GIS-Based Bivariate Models

Naser Ahmed et al.

Summary: Groundwater is a dynamic and renewable natural resource in the earth's crust. This study developed a spatial-temporal mapping approach for groundwater by considering different climatic factors and statistical models in a drought-prone area of Bangladesh. The results revealed high groundwater availability in the northeastern part and scarcity in the western part, with bivariate statistic models proving effective for both wet and dry seasons.

Gravimetric Determination of Storage Coefficient and Storage Change of Groundwater in an Uncontrolled and Unconfined Aquifer

Rosa Isabel Hernandez-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study estimated groundwater storage change and storage coefficient in an unconfined aquifer under uncontrolled conditions using gravimetric data and validated the estimates with piezometric data in Oaxaca, Mexico. Different procedures produced similar spatial distributions of groundwater recharge and discharge areas but varied in the reductions of groundwater storage volume. The gravimetric method estimated a loss that was 50% lower than the procedures based on piezometry.

Remote Sensing Inversion for Simulation of Soil Salinization Based on Hyperspectral Data and Ground Analysis in Yinchuan, China

Dan Wu et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the Pingluo area of Yinchuan, Ningxia, integrated remote sensing and mathematical modeling to evaluate soil salinization, showing that combining spectral parameters with sensitive bands improved the model's effectiveness and accuracy. Correlation analyses and multiple regression methods were used to construct the model, indicating significant correlations between green, blue, and near-infrared light with soil salinity.
