New Directional Wave Satellite Observations: Towards Improved Wave Forecasts and Climate Description in Southern Ocean

L. Aouf et al.

Summary: Despite continuous improvements in ocean wave models, significant errors remain under strongly forced conditions, particularly in the Southern Ocean. The new CFOSAT satellite provides directional spectra of ocean waves, leading to more accurate predictions of wave growth compared to using significant wave height alone. The assimilation of CFOSAT wavenumber components results in a notable reduction of model bias, especially in the Southern Ocean, and shows a consistent downward shift in wave age.

On the Generalization Ability of Data-Driven Models in the Problem of Total Cloud Cover Retrieval

Mikhail Krinitskiy et al.

Summary: This study discusses the optimization of data-driven schemes for Total Cloud Cover (TCC) retrieval from ground-based optical imagery, proposing new algorithms based on deep learning techniques. The evaluation of these algorithms is based on a dataset containing over one million all-sky optical images from various ocean regions, demonstrating the superiority of convolutional neural networks over previously published approaches.

Ocean Surface Wind Speed Dependence and Retrieval From Off-Nadir CFOSAT SWIM Data

L. Ren et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between wind speed and radar cross section with SWIM data from CFOSAT, calibrated and retrieved using a numerical weather prediction method. The results showed accurate wind retrievals at incidence angles below 7.5 degrees, consistent with CSCAT measurements.

New Observations From the SWIM Radar On-Board CFOSAT: Instrument Validation and Ocean Wave Measurement Assessment

Daniele Hauser et al.

Summary: This article discusses the initial results obtained from the SWIM instrument on board the China France Oceanography Satellite, showing that the instrument has good accuracy in measuring ocean surface waves. The study also analyzes off-nadir beam observations and highlights the importance of applying speckle correction for retrieving wave spectra from radar backscattering fluctuations. The article compares directional spectra of ocean waves to wave model data and in situ data, demonstrating the efficiency of SWIM in providing spectral properties of ocean waves in the 70500 m wavelength range.
