Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, central-line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), and catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI): The urgent need to refocus on hardwiring prevention efforts

Mohamad G. Fakih et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant increase in central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) but did not have a significant impact on catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). These findings highlight the importance of optimizing line care and providing regular feedback on performance to maintain a safe environment.

Narrow mutational signatures drive acquisition of multidrug resistance in the fungal pathogen Candida glabrata

Summary: Fungal infections are becoming a growing concern in medicine, largely due to increased resistance to antifungal drugs. This study used experimental microevolution to examine the adaptation of the yeast pathogen Candida glabrata to two widely used antifungal drugs.

Summary: The risk of colonization/infection with CRPA, C. auris, and CR-Kp is higher among COVID-19 patients, with significant spread of resistant pathogens observed. Dedicated strategies are necessary to prevent spread and maintain effective antimicrobial stewardship programs in the setting of COVID-19 care.

Epidemiology and Mycology of Candidaemia in non-oncological medical intensive care unit patients in a tertiary center in the United States: Overall analysis and comparison between non-COVID-19 and COVID-19 cases

Precious Macauley et al.

Summary: The study examined the incidence and species distribution of candidaemia cases in non-oncological patients admitted to medical ICUs, revealing a higher incidence and admission rate of candidaemia in COVID-19 patients compared to non-COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, COVID-19 patients showed lower ICU admission SOFA score but longer ICU length of stay and central venous catheter dwell time at candidaemia detection compared to non-COVID-19 patients.

Summary: COVID-19 as a novel risk factor has led to an increase in candidemia incidence and mortality rate. A retrospective study in Iran found a high mortality rate among ICU patients with COVID-19-associated candidemia, emphasizing the importance of rapid diagnosis and timely antifungal treatment.

Summary: This study identified for the first time the environmental sources of ARCP isolates causing persistent clonal outbreaks, which showed resistance to fluconazole. ARCP isolates were associated with a higher crude mortality rate and demonstrated resistance to disinfectants.

Characteristics of candidemia in COVID-19 patients; increased incidence, earlier occurrence and higher mortality rates compared to non-COVID-19 patients

Bircan Kayaaslan et al.

Summary: In ICU, COVID-19 patients are more prone to candidemia than non-COVID-19 patients, with higher incidence, earlier onset, and higher mortality. Factors like corticosteroid use, presence of sepsis, and age over 65 are independently associated with mortality in candidemia patients.

Genetically related micafungin-resistant Candida parapsilosis blood isolates harbouring novel mutation R658G in hotspot 1 of Fks1p: a new challenge?

Amir Arastehfar et al.

Summary: Echinocandin resistance is rare in clinical Candida parapsilosis isolates. A novel mutation in HS1 of FKS1 was identified in echinocandin-resistant isolates, likely leading to in vitro micafungin resistance and in vivo caspofungin therapeutic failure. Close genetic relatedness of isolates suggests clonal expansion as the possible mechanism for the acquisition of echinocandin-resistant C. parapsilosis isolates in naive patients.
